"Likewise," Kyrie agreed, pushing the bento box away from herself. "And normally it wouldn't bother me, except that I can think of no reason it would take this long to find a place to set up the tent and let us out."

The only thing that was keeping her hope alive that they hadn't been left behind somehow was that Uruloki was with Mailon, wherever he was.

At that moment, Lancaeriel joined them at the table. She was rubbing her eyes sleepily. Clearly she had just woken. Silently, she reached for another bento box and opened it.

"The guards could be giving him trouble, he could be watched... he is still technically exiled from his tribe, and my understanding is, he does have a bit of a reputation."

Lin waved at Lancaeriel as the 'older' woman joined them at the table, before going back to her line of thought.

"Miyuki knows slightly a bit more than I do, but I get an impression that among other white elves there's quite a bit of... posturing?"

Miyuki had expressed a bit of sadness how everything was about strength among the white elves. That meant you really had to, put on a show to lack a better term.

"Though that would be an improvement over being killed on sight," Lin added dryly.

Lancaeriel nodded a greeting to Lin, but she was already eating and so didn't speak.

Kyrie was thoughtful, considering what Lin had suggested. "I ... suppose it's true," she murmured. "I'll admit, I've never spent time among the White Elves to find out if they were all as horrible as they're reputed to be, with the exception of course of Mailon, and that was a completely different situation."

She shrugged. "I can only imagine, though, that if they have to act a certain way, that over time it becomes who they are."

"Well as they say, if you fake it enough, it becomes true," Lin admitted, "Which is not necessarily a bad thing if your survival depends on it. It's a real pity that Mailon has been the only one we've met and there is no way to meet other White Elves here without getting into a life or death situation."

The whole point of traveling was to find out more about the country and about the people. However, if the people weren't forthcoming there wasn't much they could do.

"Not knowing what it's like behind their borders among themselves probably just adds to their reputation for outsiders. Even with first hand accounts from those who decide to leave, you only get one view and with their reputation it probably gets quite exaggerated."

At least she hoped some of that was exaggeration because it was hard to imagine a society like that still functioning though it might explain why they were no larger than tribes.

Kyrie's eyes flickered to Lin, and she was silent for a moment, her face expressionless as she considered Lin's opinion.

"Well," she said at length, "if you believe that the violence of the White Elves is an exaggeration ... you could always try to travel amongst them and find out the truth for yourself. Have you not been speaking with Mailon?"

Lin considered Kyrie carefully, it was clear that she had hit upon a sore point. Instead she in turn was silent as if to consider Kyrie's snarky comment. She leaned back and decide that Kyrie didn't mean anything bad by it, but she might have hit a nerve.

"I have," she finally replied calmly, "I am aware how they interact and I do not doubt Mailon's accounts in the slightest."

She paused again and then added.

"I'm sorry to offend, when I mean exaggerated, I don't mean they are any less dangerous than people say they are. It's just hard to imagine how a society can exist when there is a need to be 'strong' within and outside."

Getting up from her seat, Lin decided that it was best to end this conversation. She like much of her family tended to be curious about other societies and would like to know (if possible) why people lived the way they did. She clearly had offended Kyrie, and didn't wish to get into a fight with the woman.

"At any rate, I'm going to check up on Earendil, I'll see you later," Lin smiled softly.

Though it probably wasn't quite a smile, and more of a bow out of the current conversation.

Kyrie let Lin go without a reply of any sort. She hadn't been offended by Lin's suggestion, but she had to admit to herself that she was slightly annoyed by Lin's sense of naiveté. She supposed that Gaia must be a far more ideal world than this one, and with that conclusion, she sighed and headed back to her room to continue to wait.

It was several more hours before the tent flap finally opened. It was so late that Daeron and Iorlas had already put Amir to bed before joining Cael and Lancaeriel in the living room for a game of cards. Andarien had even grown tired of the forge, and he and Shoneah were working together on a new design for her pistols at the dining table.

Wren was looking over Shiro's shoulder at his tablet, and Kaito was bouncing a ball off a cupboard door and catching it again, clearly bored.

Uruloki was the first to scramble through the door of the tent, his golden eyes scanning the interior for Kyrie. When he didn't see her, he immediately hurried off to their bedroom to find her.

Lin was listening in on Andarien and Shoneah, she knew very little about guns or pistols, but was at least familiar with the concept thanks to her grandfather. It was also interesting to watch the two work something out.

Miyuki had done what she could with the room expansions, though told herself she would talk to Lanceriael later about the nature of creating new spaces. When Uruloki had come in, she was working back on the ribbons. Looking up from her work, she waited to see of Mailon would come in.

"It would be easier with molds but we haven't got any of those," Shoneah murmured just before Uruloki scrambled through the dining room; and when the dragon hurried through she looked up from the notebook she and Andarien were working in.

Andarien also looked up, distracted from the discussion, and a moment later the tent flap opened once more and Mailon entered. There was a light dusting of snow on his hair and shoulders, but despite the obvious cold, he seemed quite comfortable in his sealskin short pants. He did look tired, though, and the first thing that came out of his mouth when he opened it was, "... food?"

"I'll get the food," Miyuki replied getting up from her seat.

They didn't have anything hot, but they still had a few things that could be eaten cold. Meats that had been smoked not to preserve it, but in case of situations like this. There was also some bread since they now had a proper kitchen.

"Take a seat," Lin told him, "How far in are we?"

She guessed they must have been quite far, since Kyrie seemed to express they would have been out hours ago, but it was hard to tell with Kyrie.

"About twenty miles," Mailon replied, dropping into a seat at the table. He held his head in his hands, his eyes closed as he waited for food to be brought to him. "The closer to the border, the more watchful the people are. I wanted to make sure we were as safe as possible."

But the distance, especially after having already traveled quite far before packing up the tent and everyone in it, had taken its toll on him, and he was completely exhausted. It seemed he was still not quite so recovered from his accident as he had hoped to be.

That was a long ways in, though, as Lin ran a critical eye over Mailon, she also suspected that distance by himself had been hard on him. The time it took could also be to how mobile he was at the moment, and right now he looked ready to drop.

Miyuki came back with a plate of bread, sliced meats and a bit of fruit.

"I think..." Lin replied, "You will need to be staying in the tent for a while, while we travel. I think that trip took a toll on you. How are you feeling at the moment?"

"Like I just left Ahkshi's clinic," Mailon grimaced. He inhaled deeply and smelled the food, and he opened his eyes and spotted Miyuki with the food for him. His mouth began to water, and he sat up a bit straighter. With another glance at Lin, he added, "I don't even know for certain whether or not I'm awake. Not fully, that much is for certain."

As he leaned back in his chair, Kyrie entered the room, Uruloki curled around her neck and rubbing his cheek against hers. She had one hand on his back protectively and was stroking his scales tenderly.

"I'm glad to see you made it," she commented to Mailon, her tone soft and sincere.

Setting the plate down in front of Mailon, Miyuki retook her seat at the table. Meanwhile, Lin considered what Mailon said silently.

Then she spoke up, "I think you'll probably need to rest for a few days then if that's how you're feeling."

That was a giant two steps backward for Mailon, and she felt sorry for him. Maybe someone can stay with him in the tent while they traveled or maybe the Pokemon so he wouldn't go that stir crazy.

Mailon looked as though he wanted to argue with Lin, but there was also resignation in his eyes, and he simply sighed softly and nodded. "I know," he murmured.

Kyrie watched him silently. They would have to stop their travels for a few days, then. As much as she hated to admit it, they needed him to be their guide through this country. Kyrie had only been here once since her initial escape, and he was far better equipped to get them through the land undetected.

"I'll go out and scout out the area," she announced quietly, her eyes still on Mailon, though she was speaking to anyone in earshot. "If we're safe here, we'll all stay here a few days, until Mailon is properly rested again."

Her comment drew a few surprised looks from some of the others who were surprised at her apparent concern for Mailon's welfare, but she made no effort to explain her reasoning. Ultimately, it didn't matter.

Lin was mildly surprised by this, but Kyrie was also someone who practiced medicine and it was just practical for her to arrange this. Even though she thought Mailon would simply stay in the tent while they traveled, this was probably a better arrangement.

"Okay then," Miyuki agreed readily, "Do you need anything before going out?"

Kyrie nodded. "My white cloak and my weapons," she replied. "Though a bit of food wouldn't go amiss, though nothing big."

She thought for a moment, then shook her head. "No, I don't need food. Just a flask of water. Miyuki, would you be so kind as to find one for me while I get my things?"

"Sure," Miyuki replied.

It wouldn't be hard to find, they always tended to keep flasks on hand. With them traveling all the time it was more convenient than keeping glass cups or mugs around. Besides, they didn't have either of those types of drinking utensils.

"Thanks." Kyrie smiled softly. Instantly, Uruloki vanished, once again taking his place around her torso, and Kyrie headed back to her room to get her cloak and weapons.

By the time she returned, Mailon had finished one of his sandwiches, and he was having trouble keeping his eyes open. Kyrie glanced at him, but rather than speaking to him she turned to Lin and murmured, "Make sure he makes it to his futon all right. He doesn't look like he'll make it on his own."

Once she got her flask from Miyuki, she pulled her white hood over her head and stepped out of the tent.

While Kyrie was out scouting, everyone else carried on as usual, since they were still stuck waiting until they knew what was out there.

Lin did end up escorting (or helping) Mailon to his room, while Miyuki cleaned the dishes left from the meal. The distraction of Mailon returning and Kyrie leaving was enough to pull her out of her rune work enough to realize she hadn't seen Ai in a while.

Normally she knew where all her Pokemon were in the tent, but now that she thought about it, Ai disappeared with Eon within the first hour. The thought made her blink and then sigh.

That could only mean one thing.

One by one or in pairs, the others also headed back to their rooms for the night - at least, most of them.

Shoneah may be both Gaian and elvish, but she had grown up without magic in her life, and they were in such a dangerous territory that she wasn't sure how much she trusted Lancaeriel's protection runes. They were as yet untrusted, after all, and if for whatever reason they failed, everyone might be forced to pay the price.

So it was that she had stayed in the living room after most of the others had gone to bed for the night, with Andarien's notebook in hand and her pistols on the floor in front of her. The sound of Miyuki's sigh caught her attention, and she looked up to see what was going on.

"Miyuki?" she called softly, leaning forward in her seat and lowering the notebook. "Are you all right?"

"I just realized that Ai and Eon had disappeared shortly after we started traveling in the tent," Miyuki replied, "I think we're due for another batch of eevees."

She'll have to leave food out for them, she knew Eon would always make sure Ai was well fed. Though at this rate, they were really going to have a horde of the critters around. She wondered how Ai managed getting pregnant all the time, not knowing that Pokemon were quite the breeding machines.

Shoneah smiled faintly, relieved that there was nothing wrong. "Is that a bad thing?" she asked. "I always thought that families growing was a good thing."

She set the notebook aside and picked up her pistols. "I'm surprised you're not going to bed yet," she commented, joining her at the table. She holstered her pistols but didn't tie them down, wanting to make sure they were ready just in case. "Everyone else is already asleep, I'm sure."

"It's not," Miyuki chuckled a bit, "But I do wonder how many eevees we're going to have by the time the two decide they're done."

Between her and Andarien there were six eevee evolutions, quite a pack really.

"As for bed, well, I'll go in another minute, I'm just not that tired at the moment."

Despite the fact all she had been doing was rune work for most of the day.

"How about you?"

Shoneah shook her head. "Tired enough, I suppose, but ... if it's as dangerous as everyone's saying it is here, then I don't want to be caught unawares. I know Lancaeriel put protection runes on the tent, but ... I don't know how well I can trust them."

She knew runes worked. She was sitting in the middle of an entire home made of runes. But Lancaeriel herself had been anxious about not making any mistakes. And what if she had?
