"I'll whack him for you," Holly replied dryly.

It was a bit of an infamous incident, as Holly really didn't like people finding out about her... other body parts. When Errol had gotten grabby with her, she slapped him on the hand and began lecturing him about propriety. It was kind of funny after the fact.

Rose laughed. "Good. And if I see him anywhere near you, I'll come get you," she promised.

Just then the door opened, and the butler stood in the doorway. He was well dressed, and he had the properly expressionless face of a servant.

"Good evening," he said flatly, his words long and drawn out. "Master Peter is expecting you. Do come in."

He held out his hand as if to take their cloaks.

Holly shook her head, "Thank you, but we're fine."

She didn't wear a cloak out, and would like to keep her bonnet. Just like Rose would like to keep her cloak. It wasn't a surprise though, their habit really did confuse everyone.

The butler stepped aside and bowed low, gesturing towards the inside of the house as he did so. "The party is in the ballroom," he drawled. "Straight down the hall and immediately on your right."

"Thank you, Roger," Rose said cordially. She took Holly's arm and began to lead her down the hallway.

The ballroom was enormous - easily twice the size of Rose's house, and twice as tall. Floor to ceiling windows covered the two outside walls, showing the grandeur of the tropical gardens that filled the back of the property. Along one wall were three tables laden with large, covered dishes, while there were six tables in rows of two nearer the door, set for the guests to enjoy their meals. There was a small chamber orchestra already playing music along a third wall, and the remainder of the space was left open for dancing.

The room was brightly lit with glowstones - expensive sources of light imported from neighbouring countries that produced no heat - and decorated with brightly coloured tropical flowers, streamers, ribbons, and more.

As the girls reached the doorway, a second servant who was standing there faced into the ballroom and announced, "Miss Holly and Miss Rose," in a predictably monotone voice.

There were already several people there: Peter of course was surrounded by a group of girls, all of whom were younger than Rose and Holly; a group of young men were gathered around the table of drinks, and there were a few groups of girls standing in tight circles and giggling amongst themselves.

"Ah, ladies!" Peter's older brother, Rolph, greeted them cheerfully, kissing each of them on both cheeks as he always did. The only reason Rose allowed it was because Rolph was married, and thus not a threat. "Welcome, both of you."

He chuckled, his blue eyes sparkling brightly. "I must confess I am amazed that the two of you continue to accept Peter's invitations."

"It would be rude to turn him down when he requests after an excuse is given," Holly replied dryly.

She could be blunt with it, Rolph was the more responsible of the two brothers, probably the result of being the eldest.

The neko gave a small smile, "I'm surprised he continues to invite us..."

Rolph had chaperone enough of these events to know when they were here, things tended to happen. Nothing overly scandalous but enough where you might not want to invite them if you wanted a truly formal gathering.

Rolph laughed. "Well, he's always up for a good joke, and he knows that when you two are here things are never dull."

He himself took pleasure in watching the results of these jokes, as he was quite safe from having them played on him.

"That being said," he added, leaning closer to them, "what should I be avoiding tonight?"

Rose's eyes glinted as she looked around to make sure they wouldn't be overheard. "The pastries that will come out after dinner," she confided in him. "The petite fours are safe, as are the lemon tarts, but aside from that about a quarter of them will make you cry."

Rolph grinned and patted Rose on the head as if she were a child, then tugged her hood playfully. "Thanks for the heads up," he winked at her. "I'll be sure to tell no one."

"Not even your wife?" Rose laughed. Celia was a kind woman, sensible and quiet, and she was one person that Rose might - might - feel bad about tricking like this.

"Well... Rolph could always make sure to get Celia desert before she grabs it herself," Holly replied good naturally.

No one would think it odd of Rolph to do so. Actually now that Holly thought about it, didn't Celia like petite fours as well? She didn't ask Rose which type she got, cake was cake. There was rarely a cake that Holly didn't like.

"Thank you, Holly, for remembering that I am, in fact, a gentleman," Rolph said dryly, bowing slightly to her. Then he straightened and looked around. "Now, everything aside from the pastries are safe, yes?"

Rose smiled as she straightened her hood. "To my knowledge. I only brought the pastries."

"Oh?" Rolph raised one eyebrow. "No furry friends?"

Rose had the grace to blush slightly and she shuffled her feet awkwardly. "Holly talked me out of it," she admitted.

She and Rolph had played together as children, and she'd had no qualms about bringing mice, rats, bushbabies, or whatever furry creature she'd been able to get her hands on to parties when they'd been young.

"I like excitement in my parties, but I do draw the line at bringing furry creatures that will make everyone scramble," Holly replied.

She didn't add, it mainly made the servants scramble to get the darn thing out of the room.

Rolph laughed heartily and Rose giggled softly at Holly's response, and the Rolph bowed yet again to the two ladies.

"Until later," he smiled warmly at them. And with a mock tip of a hat, he headed off to join another group.

Rose giggled again and turned back to Holly. "Is there anyone else we wish to speak with?" she asked her cheerfully. "Or shall we help ourselves to some punch?"

One of the things she loved about where they lived was the variety of juices they had available from the fruit that grew nearby.

"Let's have some punch, if any of the other girls want to converse they will come," Holly replied.

She didn't mention the boys, the boys weren't as picky about conversation partners, especially if the partner was female. Other females on the other hand were quite picky for both genders she found. If there were anyone who cared for Holly or Rose, they would come, and there were a few.

"True," Rose agreed. "Let's go then."

She smiled and headed over towards the punch. There were several groups of people chatting between the door and the punch table, and though some women smiled and nodded greetings, no one actually spoke to them. They got their drinks, more people arrived, they spoke with a few of the women, skirted skilfully away from Errol when he tried to ask one of them to dance, exchanged pleasantries with a few of the other boys, and then finally dinner was announced.

The first course was soups and salads accompanied by slices of fresh fruit. Following was a course of meat and veggies, then more fresh fruit, and finally fresh pie - coconut, banana cream, strawberry, and more.

"Phew, people are going to be too full for the pastries at this rate," Rose commented to Holly, patting her stomach appreciatively.

"Well, the night is young," Holly replied.

there was still dancing to be done, and she was sure someone was going to snack once the dancing started. Though she really liked the pie, despite the fact pies weren't her favourite dessert.

"That is true," Rose admitted.

The orchestra had been playing quietly all through dinner, but now they picked up again, the tune inviting the guests to dance. Almost immediately, Peter appeared next to the two girls, holding his hand out to Holly.

"May I have the pleasure of this dance?" he asked her, bowing low to her.

Holly was mildly surprised, normally Rose was the first to be asked to a dance. Holly curtsied and nodded.

"Just one," she replied, holding out a hand to him.

Peter took Holly's hand and whisked her out onto the dance floor along with other couples that had had the same idea. They took their places opposite each others while the other couples did the same, waiting for the dance to begin. This was an old dance, one which allowed for conversation while each of the couples followed prescribed steps to utilize the entire dance floor as a single unit.

The orchestra finished their introduction, and just before they started in on the dance itself, Rose showed up in the line with a young man named Will, who obviously had asked her to dance as well.

Holly was relived that she wasn't going to be alone in this dance. If she stopped to think about it, it was amazing that she was even in a party dancing. Never would she thought she would be here. After all, she had to learn all the customs from scratch.

The dance was one of the simpler ones, and soon enough it was finished. Rose made her way towards Holly as Peter bowed once more to her as was custom for the men to do after each dance. She smiled politely at Peter and stepped around him to take Holly's arm.

"Shall we?" she murmured cheerfully.

Holly chuckled as she let herself be led along to the next dance.

"Let's," she told her friend.

This might be a bit amusing.

Rose led Holly out onto the dance floor as the orchestra introduced the next song and took the lead once the song began. It was a lively one, much more fun than most of the dances, and Rose was quite enjoying herself. Then, suddenly, halfway through the song, there was a loud yelp, and someone made a mad dash for the punch table.

Rose laughed and spun Holly. "Score one for us."

Holly laughed at that, "Now the question is, who is going to keep trying?"

Word tended to get around pretty quickly, but it never seemed to stop some people. Well that and chili wasn't harmful and some people liked that sort of thing.

"Anyone who thinks there's only one," Rose grinned back. "That being said, after this dance, I propose we take a break and get some dessert of our own."

And a drink. Dancing was quite the exercise, after all, and the night was still very warm.

That was true, but anyone who knew them should know that wasn't the only one.

"Sounds like a good idea, it would prove that there are some that are safe," Holly smiled.

Since they knew which ones were.

"And who knows?" Rose grinned, her eyes sparkling. "Those who don't know we brought them might even believe that we didn't!"

Doubtful, but always worth a try. Rose especially always seemed to be the cause of any trouble that arose, though everyone knew that Holly was often enough her partner in crime.

Holly chuckled again and shook her head, because they both knew that was highly unlikely.

"We're the only people who would do this..."

Well, Rose did it, Holly just allowed it by going along or at least downgrading it. So she was a bit of an enabler that way.
