Going through Gemia - 119 4A

Post by Nara-pyon on Wed Jun 03, 2015 11:26 pm

The group was half a day's journey into Gemia when the tent was set up and the travelers were able to go outside again.

Gemia was a beautiful country, just as Illsbruic had been. Lush, green jungles, enormous plants, crystal clear rivers and small lakes; animals everywhere - big and small, friendly and dangerous ... the air, like in Illsbruic, was humid, but a bit hotter.

"You're sure we're not in Illsbruic anymore?" Andarien asked doubtfully as he stepped out into the jungle and looked around.

Shoneah was right behind him. "If we were, they wouldn't let us out," she pointed out.

"And Kyrie did say that if we wanted to see the landscape of Illlsbruic, Gemia was the same," Miyuki added as she stepped out, "Makes you wonder how large the last country was."

Unless it was a small country, normally there would have been some change in terrain, but it looked exactly the same.

"Though.." she murmured tilting her head slightly, "It feels a bit hotter here..."

As if the humidity wasn't bad enough. Miyuki was starting to envy Kyrie's choice in clothing, but would never wear it herself. Even her mother was a better as she often worn midriffs, but all the dark colouring must make the heat difficult.

The only thing keeping Lin from getting out her old Southern Elven dress was the fact she needed the mobility.

"Illsbruic is pretty big, we just didn't get to see most of it," Kyrie smiled. "We followed basically the northwestern corridor."

"Sorry about that," Lashrael apologized softly as she and Jassin stepped outside and looked around. She and Jassin had each been given a drop of dragon's blood, and now they both were able to understand and speak every language, like the others.

Wren waved away the apology. "Don't be silly," she told her firmly. "It was our decision to help you."

Lashrael smiled at Wren, then turned to Miyuki and told her, "You are right. It is hotter here. Gemia averages about five degrees hotter than Illsbruic, and with more humidity." Her smile widened slightly. "Prepare to be quite warm."

"I hope no one overheats..." Miyuki murmured.

Eron spoke up softly, "At least no one is going to really burn..."

Which was true, everyone had been traveling out in the elements for a few years now. It was hard on Eron at first because he burned easily. His wings were of no help because they were leathery skin and not insulated like the angel wings were.

"Though if we find any aloe plants I recommend cultivating those, they will be useful, and I here some people eat them."

"I wouldn't say anyone," Kaito quipped, nudging Eron's elbow gently and nodding towards Daenis. The White Elven woman had come out for some fresh air, since she hadn't been out in quite a while, but she looked a bit ill. She was shielding her eyes with both hands and looking up towards the sun, but looked like she wasn't enjoying it at all.

"There are many plants we can find and harvest here," Shiro pointed out. "In Gaia, most of the medicines we use come from rain forests like this. I'm sure we'll find plenty we can use."

"Unfortunately bio-chemistry is not my area of expertise," Eron admitted, "I'll help where I can though. Can't really pass up a chance like this one."

Working in a lab would be all the same, Eron would just need more direction when it came to working with plants and other bio material.

Meanwhile Lin scooted over to Daenis realizing this heat would not be good for her at all.

"How are you feeling?" she asked, "We could wait until dark for you to come out if it's better...."

Poor Daenis tended to miss so much because she couldn't adjust to the heat.

Shiro grinned at Eron. "I'm sure Khetal will be taking all kinds of samples for experiments. It's his thing."

Khetal had been researching medicines for nearly a thousand years, if not more, so Shiro was hoping to share quite a obit of his Gaian knowledge with the man.

Daenis looked over at Lin, and despite the fact that it was morning and she had gotten a full night of sleep, woken well rested, and had a good breakfast, she looked exhausted.

"I'll wait for Ira to come out," she murmured tiredly, "and if he can't help me then I'll go back inside."

She did want to see more of the lands through which they were traveling, but they were so far south - and if she hadn't been pregnant, that might be another story; but she was, and so she tired easily even in the best of conditions.

"I'll wait with you," Lin replied, "And if it doesn't help I'll go inside with you."

She figured Daenis must also be getting lonely always being inside since getting pregnant but this heat did put an extra strain on her.

Miyuki couldn't help but keep looking at everything, it was so vibrate here.

"Maybe we should rest here a while," Earendil suggested. "Perhaps Kyrie could tell us about this country and its people - that way if we run into anyone, we won't have to worry as much about insulting them. Fewer problems."

Then, with a glance at Daenis, he added, "And then Daenis can rest a bit and find out if Ira will be able to help her enough to not have to stay inside."

As if on cue, the Glaceon bounded out of the tent and into his mistress' waiting arms. Daenis nuzzled his side with her cheek for a moment, then let him climb around her neck, where he made himself comfortable.

Lin smiled at Ira, "Let's take a moment then and let Ira do his work..."

Since she assumed it would take a bit for Daenis to cool down or at least feel better since Ira could cool things down rather quickly.

"And then we can hear a bit more about Gemia," Miyuki added.

"Oh, you don't have to wait for me to hear about the country," Daenis smiled tiredly. "I can listen."

Kyrie leaned against a nearby tree as the others made themselves comfortable. "Well, it's a land of humans," she began, starting with the obvious.

Jassin cursed quietly in the Earth Elven tongue, earning him a slight glare from Kyrie.

"As I'm sure all of you should know by now," she went on, "Gemia and Illsbruic have been at war with each other for centuries, if not millennia. Definitely longer than I've been alive. They have similar climates, except that Gemia is hotter. More towns than settlements, which makes it different from Illsbruic. They also have different crops - a lot of sugar cane, which is their biggest export."

"Sugar cane?" Miyuki whistled, "Expensive stuff..."

While she loved sweets, in truth they had been using other means to sweeten their foods because sugar cane tended to only grow in hot places and as a result was expensive. In many ways more expensive than in the Four Lands as the Southland had most of the sugar cane crop and not at war with the other races. In fact, Miyuki noticed due to the smaller size, and lack of constant warring, it was easier back there to get certain goods (as long as they didn't have a short shelf life).

"So, how difficult is it going to be to travel through this area?" Lin asked.

If they were constantly fighting with elves, and anyone not human, she imagine it would be relatively difficult.

"Provided we keep our heads," Kyrie replied, looking at Jassin and Lashrael without changing expression, "we should be fine. In my experience, as long as we show now ill intention, we will be treated well enough. With suspicion, but we should be safe."

"Even us?" Mailon asked, sitting next to his wife. He of all of them knew just how strong the prejudice was against White Elves - and not without cause.

Kyrie smiled. "We're far enough south that they may not even have heard of the White Elves' reputation."

"Well suspicion we can do," Lin admitted.

It wouldn't be the first time they were in a place that was suspicious of them. Miyuki nodded in agreement to this, it meant at the very least they might be able to do a bit of business and she would be able to tell a few tales.

Wren smiled and glanced at Lashrael. "I think we can safely say we're used to having people suspicious of us," she chuckled softly.

Lashrael blushed faintly. "It's what we're brought up with," she explained quietly.

"I know," Wren laughed. "I was just teasing. But it's quite true, people have been suspicious of us in every country we've been to, save Caras Galadhon."

Lin chuckled, "At this point, I think it's only natural, and really there are worse things than just being suspicious."

They've also met a few unfriendly locals as well, so Lin knew it could be worse really.

"And some people warm up to us eventually," Miyuki added with a laugh, "Can't wait to see what the towns are like."

"Nearest one is a day's journey from here," Kyrie grinned at Miyuki. She was always revitalized by the kitsune's cheerfulness and her willingness to always see the best in any situation, to look for the best in every person they met. "Nice enough place. Wealthy place, too. Always something going on."

"Good somethings?" Mirania asked, a sparkle in her eye.

Kyrie laughed. "Usually."

"Well, that's promising," Lin smiled.

Miyuki nodded and grinned from ear to ear. It was easy to tell she was excited, but since they didn't get to interact a lot in the last country, this wasn't surprising.

Lin looked over at Daenis, "And how are you feeling?"

Daenis was giggling at Miyuki, as many of the others were, but at Lin's question, she turned to her and smiled warmly.

"A bit better, thank you," she murmured. "Ira really is quite helpful. I think with a bit more time to cool, I'll be all right to walk for a while."

She really wanted to, too; it had been a long time now since she'd been able to stay outside with the others while they were traveling, and with Mailon being one of the ones outside the tent as a protector, she hadn't been seeing much of her husband lately either.

"That's good to know, and we're not in any hurry," Lin replied.

This environment was good to them, there were plenty of places to find food so they didn't have to worry about supplies as much.

It took a while for Daenis to feel cool enough that she was comfortable walking, but since she was ready, the group started off again, with Kyrie leading them towards the nearest town.

Though Kyrie had told them it would be only a day's journey to the town, it ended up taking a day and a half to even get close to the town. They did see various people on their way, though: men and women working in the jungle, clearing trees for farming, or tracking game; but those they saw seemed to try to avoid them.

It was the middle of the afternoon when they reached the first signs of civilization. An enormous plantation of sugar cane, with dozens of people working in the fields. Most of the men were topless in the heat, their sun-bronzed skin glistening with sweat.

"I don't think I've ever seen a sugar cane farm before," Lin spoke to the others as they came up to the plantation.

Farm probably wasn't a good term for it, the place was huge and seems like the owners had hired many workers to work the fields.

"I think it's safe to say that most of us haven't," Lamruil spoke up with a chuckle.

One of the plantation workers looked up when he heard the voices, and he stood up straight and braced himself against the hoe he was using.

"Hey!" he called. "What are you doing here?"

There was annoyance in his voice, but no anger. His shout attracted the attention of several other workers, and like a domino effect, very quickly more and more of the workers were staring at the group. One of them ran off towards a massive mansion that was nestled atop a slight hill.

Kyrie raised one hand in greeting. "Just some travelers passing through," she called back. "We mean no harm."

Lin looked around at the workers and hoped no one was going to get violent. She didn't like the fact they were gaining so much attention this way.

Meanwhile in the mansion, Holly was putting on the finishing touches to dress that had been ordered from her. It was a good thing she had asked for that re-measuring all those weeks ago, and was quite pleased with the result. The green dress had lace only on the hem of the skirt and the neckline. She chose a lighter green to do a simple and stylized bamboo print along the skirt, though it could be easily mistaken for sugarcane sticks.

"Ah... perfect," she murmured as she got up from the stool she was kneeling on.

She smoothed out her candy decorated skirt, unaware of the shouting that was going on outside. The bonnet tended to make it hard for her to hear, and everyone sometimes thought she was a bit deaf.

For the most part, people were simply staring at the newcomers, though the ma who was closest to them took his hoe in his hand, put it over his shoulder, and approached them. There was nothing threatening in his manner, though he clearly wasn't happy to see them.

"You are aware that this is someone's property, their livelihood," he said as if he expected them to realize it on their own. "If you damage anything, you will have to pay for it."

"We won't touch a thing," Kyrie promised, holding her hands up, empty. "Nothing to worry about." She smiled easily at him, trying to put him at ease.

Suddenly, the door to the mansion burst open and one of the workers ran inside.

"Elves!" he called out urgently.

Gerald and Edward, Celia's father and oldest brother, the ones who ran the plantation, were immediately alert.

"What are they doing?" Edward asked brusquely, pushing his chair back and rising to his feet.

"So far just walking," the worker replied. He reached for the door and held it open for Edward.
