Holly jumped when the man came running in and mentally cursed the fact she had to handicap her own hearing to fit in. Unlike the others in the house though, Holly was curious. She had never seen an elf of this world before. Heard plenty about them, and a lot of it wasn't kind. Though she suspected it was because they were often fighting with one of the neighbouring elven countries.

"Uhm... what is happening?" Holly inquired softly.

She followed after Edward because she wanted to see, she had been among humans for so long she just wanted to see another race that wasn't human.

She had no shame in sounding ignorant, as women did not fight in battles and this was supposed to be outside her area of knowledge anyways.

Lin, while use to the treatment they received from different societies still couldn't help but be a bit weirded out by the fact the man sounded like they were delinquent teenagers and not just travelers passing through.

Edward ran outside, but since Holly looked as if she was coming too, the worker held the door for her as well so that she also could go out.

"A whole huge group of people just showed up," he told her. "And not just elves. Weird people, too ... not even sure you can call them people, either. I wasn't close enough to see a lot, but it looked like some of them had ... I don't know. Animal parts."

He looked as though the very idea of it sickened him, and he brushed past Holly and followed after Edward.

The workman speaking with the group stopped and rested his hoe on the ground again, leaning on it once more. "What brings you out this way?"

"Like I said, just passing through," Kyrie repeated, just as relaxed as she had been so far. The fact that she wasn't getting aggravated by him seemed to reassure the man, though he did keep his eye on them.

The moment Holly stepped outside and laid eyes upon the group she gasped. To anyone else she just seemed in shock at the appearance of the group, and to be fair she was. Forgetting herself for a moment she hurried after Edward to get a better look at them.

It was a good thing Kyrie was relaxed, really, there was only so many times one could say they were just passing through.

Miyuki didn't seemed bothered by the questioning though and was gladly just turning her head and looking around. She found this place so neat, and the mansion kind of reminded her of the main house back in the Gaia.

Really, the worker was just stalling to give Edward time to get out there.

"Hey, you lot," Edward called out as he ran towards the group. "What are you doing on my property?"

"Just passing through," Kyrie repeated again, still calm. "We don't want to cause any trouble, it's just that it's been a long time since we've seen people - any people - outside of our own group, and we were hoping for nothing more than some conversation."

Edward paused and looked at the group suspiciously, his gaze resting on each one of them for a few seconds before he moved on to the next one.

Kaito elbowed his way through the group, pushing his way to the front to see for himself what was going on. When he got there, he blinked.

"Hey, isn't that girl wearing Gaian clothes?" he asked. He pointed at Holly and looked to Shiro and Lin for confirmation of his thoughts. He had never been one to care about fashion - heck, for most of his life he'd been a practical mute, and most of his adult life had been spent here in Arda - but still, the dress and bonnet the girl was wearing was unlike anything he had seen anywhere in Arda before.

If Holly was the fainting type, she might have felt a bit faint upon seeing the group. She couldn't help but stare, and to others around her it might seem like she was staring out of morbid curiousity. Yet she couldn't help it, she recognized those races! Elves certainly (they didn't look any different than Gaian elves), but there was also an angel, a demon, a kitsune and nekos! There were actual nekos, the group themselves looked to be from Gaia.

Could it be? Could these be actual Gaians or were they from foreign countries away from here? Considering how isolated the humans here were, it wouldn't surprise her if there were other races far away and no one knew it.

Lin glanced discretely at the girl that Kaito was pointing at and had to do a double take. It was the most colourful clothing she had ever seen (minus the fact it had a lot of pink). She couldn't recall ever seeing clothes like that anywhere they've traveled.

"Looks like something Helen would make," she finally replied.

Edward was still examining the group silently, and when Kaito shoved his way to the front, his eyes narrowed slightly.

"What are you?" he asked flatly.

Kaito blinked. "Me? I'm a neko. Angelic neko. And my brother here -" He grabbed Shiro by the arm and dragged him forward. "- is a de- I mean, a yokai neko."

"We are a group of many races," Kyrie added with a smile. "Angel, kitsune, yokai, elves, and those of mixed blood. We are simply travelers from another land exploring Arkandia and learning about its people."

Travelers... Holly could feel a stirring of joy, unbridled joy and hope. This was the answer she was looking for to her troubles. Carefully stepping forward, more wary of the fact Edward was in charge and not her, she asked softly.

"If it's not too forward of me to ask Edward, where do these travelers hail from?"

It took every bit to remain soft, demure... she couldn't sound excited.

Edward glanced at Holly before looking back at the group.

"As of yet, they have not said," he replied, folding his arms across his chest.

Kyrie shrugged. "We are from many different places. There are those here who are from various countries in Arkandia, who are either fleeing their own land or searching for those in others. There are others from the continent of the Four Lands, across the ocean, who seek only to learn what other people there in this world that we all share. There are some from another realm entirely, and for some their wish is to explore, while for others it is simply to get back home. We want nothing of you or of your people, or your land, save to pass through unmolested."

Edward was quiet a moment longer as he mulled over Kyrie's words. His expression was serious, thoughtful, his brow furrowed deeply. Then he spoke.

"If you are who and what you claim to be, then I recommend that you show yourselves to the town council," he said authoritatively. "It is they who can give you permission to stay in the area, or to pass through our lands. As for myself and my land, I give you free and safe passage to go to the town."

Kyrie bowed respectfully. "Thank you. We shall do as you suggest."

Another realm, Holly did her best not to clench her hands at the thought. Even if it wasn't Gaia, this was as close as she was going to get to going somewhere safer. As much as she love these people, she never felt truly safe among these people.

Her mind was made up, she would ask Rose what the council had decided, and provided the group wasn't forced to leave immediately, Holly would pack up her things and join them. If she could gain permission from them first.

Lin wondered if they made the girl nervous, then again, it seemed that they made a lot of people here nervous or on their guard. So this shouldn't surprise her really.

"In other words," Earendil murmured, "we need to get off his property."

"Pretty much," Kyrie agreed. She looked around at the rest of the group. "Let's go, then. The town should be just a few miles from here. Then we can rest."

As the group started off again, the humans watching them in silence, Shoneah was also keeping an eye on them. Something was odd about them, she felt. Not in their silence - they weren't trusted, after all - but in one of the humans in particular. Most just seemed suspicious or annoyed with them. But that girl who was behind the owner ... there seemed to be something else in her expression. Fascination? Curiosity? But even those didn't seem to come close to matching the light in her eyes, and yet ... for a human, what else could there be that wasn't negative?

As the group disappeared off towards the town, Holly forced herself to look away. There was little point in thinking about it now, whether or not they could stay or not was out of her hands.

"What a strange group..." Holly murmured.

It was the polite thing to say, even if Holly didn't agree with it. There was nothing strange about a group like that traveling, at least not to her.

Re: Going through Gemia - 119 4A

Post by Nara-pyon on Sat Jun 06, 2015 2:17 pm

The town itself reminded Shiro of a mishmash of Gaian cultures: an English village with wide dirt streets and horses and carriages going hither and thither while most of the people walked to their destinations, Caribbean-style homes built of bamboo, some with verandas, others without, some with simple porches, some with upper story verandas and wide open windows and doors, enormous green plants everywhere; there were many women wearing similar dresses - and men clothes of the same Gaian time period - as the girl from the plantation, some more decorated, others less; there was also an obvious difference in classes - high, middle, low, visible by their types of clothes or appearances of health ... There also seemed to be something of an Old West factor, oddly enough. One place, presumably a tavern or inn or something similar, had a few men sitting in chairs on its porch, their feet up on the rail, chewing something and glaring at everyone and everything around them.

"So familiar," he murmured to Kaito, "and yet not."

As had happened at the plantation, as the group made their way up the street, people stopped and stared at them, most of them suspiciously, some of them with open hostility. Some entered the nearest building, others simply froze where they were; but no one approached or spoke to them.

"Town hall is this way," Kyrie told the rest of the group, beckoning them forward again. She directed them to a large building at the end of the street. It had a newer look than most of the rest of the buildings, and actually had glass in its windows, and on top of the building, in a small steeple, was a large brass bell.

"I guess that kind of clothing is normal here," Lin murmured to Kaito remembering his comment about the girl's clothing.

"I would like a dress..." Miyuki murmured taking it all in, "Don't know if it would fit my tails though..."

Her skirts had to be specially made to clip around her tail. She didn't even bother commenting how she wasn't sure if anyone who serve her.

"It's still... kind of strange..." Lin comment.

She didn't know why she thought it was still strange.

"Well, there have been other similarities between here and Gaia," Shiro pointed out. "English being the common tongue of this world, for one."

"You could always try speak with a tailor, Miyuki," Iorlas smiled at her niece. "It's worth a try, even if they don't end up willing to help you."

Jassin made a face. "And that's if they even allow us to stick around," he pointed out.

"Well," Kyrie murmured, "we're about to find out."

She nodded towards the town hall, where five men in what could in Gaia almost be called business suits stepped outside and formed a line in front of the steps that led up to the building.

Lin hoped they would, but it didn't look hopeful. In fact, if she didn't know any better it looked like they were trying to intimidate the group. It might not seem like much with all the men dressed in business suits, but Lin knew her father could look really intimidating a business suit.

"I guess they're meeting us..."

Or they just didn't want the group to enter the town hall.

"Just make sure to be respectful," Kyrie told the group, looking over her shoulder, "and there should be no trouble with them allowing us to stay here."

She focused her gaze for a moment on Jassin and Lashrael, and then turned her attention back to the men who were in front of the town hall. Once they were in front of the men, she stopped the group and bowed deeply.

"We are travelers," she began, straightening again, "passing through your land on our way to another. We seek only a place outside your town to set up our camp and rest and resupply for a few days."

Technically they didn't need either of those things - they could rest whenever they wanted, and they had plenty of supplies - but those were the things any traveler would need, and a sense of propriety, even out here, would dictate that these two basic needs not be denied anyone passing through.

The man in the middle took a step forward and nodded at the group. "I am Jared, head of this council and of this town," he told them. "Please, come inside so that we may discuss this matter and learn more about you."

He turned towards the other men who were with him and nodded. The four moved to the sides of the steps, creating a pathway for the group to enter the building.

Well that was hopeful, Lin thought to herself as they entered the building.

It was also a good thing everyone in their group was out of the tent, it would lessen some of the suspicion going on.

She wondered if they would all fit inside.

The building, big as it was, was one massive room with some structural posts placed strategically through it. At the back of the room there was one long table with chairs around it, but it was only enough to seat ten people. The rest of the place was clear floor, save several stacks of chairs that were in a back corner. The men in suits immediately set about setting up the chairs for the newcomers, and while Kyrie made sure that Daenis was among the first to sit, she herself waited until she was the last one, and then pulled a chair up to the front of the group so that she was in the best position to act as their spokesperson.

The five men on the other hand took chairs from around the table, and sat in a row facing the group.

"Now," said Jared, the leader, "before we can grant you any permission for anything, we must know who you are, and your purposes. As I said, I am Jared, head of the council, and these men constitute the remainder: Lee, Floyd, Sully and Emmet. And you are?"

Kyrie took the time to introduce everyone in order of where they were sitting, giving their name, their race, and possible relationship with others in the group. There were a lot of them, and it took quite a while, especially when she had to repeat the more names that were more difficult to pronounce (like Shoneah and Lashrael).

It was hard to believe there was such a wide variety of people traveling in one group, which was why it took so long to give introductions. Once introductions were given though, then came the repeated explanation that they were simply traveling through wanting to explore the whole continent.

They hoped that they would be allowed to resupply (though really it was an excuse to stick around and look around).

The councilmen were very thorough in their questioning, too: they wanted to know where each individual had come from and where their final destination lay, as well as their intentions on their way there. They were very suspicious to start out with, but as they leaned some of the peoples' stories - especially finding out that Daenis was pregnant - their expressions and tones softened, and it was clear that they were warming up, even if only slightly, to the group. They even expressed sympathy and welcome to Lashrael and Jassin, who had both been instrumental in the deaths of many of their people.

"There is a field which missed its planting this year," Jared said at last, "just outside the town. You are welcome to set up your camp there. I hope however that you do not take it amiss if we have some men posted nearby, for your safety as much as ours. We are, after all, strangers, and there are those who will not take kindly to having elves - especially Earth Elves - in our midst."

"Thank you," Kyrie smiled, bowing her head to them again. "We are grateful for your hospitality."

That had gone better than expected and the rest of their group gave their thanks to the councilmen. Being allowed in an unplanted field was quite generous.

While this was happening, Holly was just finally making it back to town. Her arms a bit lighter and her money pouch a bit heavier. It took a lot of discipline to not rush back to see what had happened. She had been patience for this long, she could be patience for a bit longer.

One of the councilmen led the group off to where the field was located, and there they began to get their things set up.

Meanwhile, Rose was just leaving her father's mill, and as she walked up the lane, she saw Holly just ahead of her. Her eyes lit up, and she waved enthusiastically.

"Holly!" she called, grinning, "wait for me!"

She picked up her skirt and ran down the lane, her cloak billowing behind her as she did so. Hot as the day was, she still refused to remove it.

Holly paused in her walking, waiting for Rose to catch up.

"Did you just finish work for the day?" she asked, "I'm heading back to the shop right now."

She had left one of the apprentices in charge, while she went off to the plantation.

Rose nodded, then shrugged. "Sort of. Papa said I could go, but he's going to keep working another hour or two. Actually ..."

Her eyes sparkled, and she looked around furtively before leaning closer to Holly so that she could lower her voice.

"Did you hear about the group that's come to town?" she asked quietly. "Huge group, fifteen or twenty people - all kinds of races! Old man Levi was picking up flour earlier and he said they'd been brought into town hall! Rumour has it they're asking permission to stay here for a while!"

That would be a first for the town - but then, it was a first (in her memory anyways) that anyone from another country had ever passed through here, let alone asked to stay.

Holly nodded at this, "I saw them, they passed through the plantation on the way here. It was Edward who told them to go to the town hall."

She wondered if they would be given permission to stay, she hoped so. It would give her time to make arrangements, otherwise she would have no qualms in running after the group. A risk for certain, but one Holly was willing to take.

"It's been a while since everyone has been sent into a tizzy..."

Not since Holly had arrived.
