"That was a heavy sigh," Shoneah commented. She was among the last to pass through the foyer to the kitchen for breakfast, but the sigh had caught her attention, and so she stopped to see what was the matter. "Something on your mind?"

It was a bit of a rhetorical question, as it was obvious that something was on Miyuki's mind, and something big; but it was a non-intrusive way of asking what it was, one that allowed Miyuki to simply decline to say anything if she so wished without sounding rude in the least.

"Just coming to a difficult choice," Miyuki admitted, "I would like to be able to support everyone today, but... I don't think I can go out there unless I'm being attacked first."

Ai mewed at her and rubbed her face against the chair that Miyuki was perched on. Miyuki chuckled and leaned over to pet the Pokemon.

"Logically, I know this needs to be done. No one in their own country will probably punish them for taking lives like that," Miyuki continued, "So I understand it completely, but even if they are awful people, they're still people.... even if they didn't see their victims as people."

It wasn't a cop-out, it was a fact. There was such a strong sense of 'other' between the countries at times it made Miyuki kind of sad, or as Holly and Rose proved, sometimes within a country between towns.

"I think the saddest thing is, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have taken the money if they were asked to do it to people like them."

Miyuki gave a pained smiled as she added.

"Mah.... I would take being left out of games for being a kitsune as a kid over something like this."

Shoneah blinked in surprise - not because of Miyuki's hesitation to fight without first being attacked, but because of her final comment.

"You were left out of games because of what you were?" she repeated. "Where did this happen? Somewhere like here?"

Meaning the world they were in, where racial purity seemed to be important to most of the people.

Miyuki was equally surprised that, that was the thing that caught Shoneah's attention. She smiled at the memory though, because it did end well for her.

"Ah... that was a long time ago back in the Four Lands, different continent same world," Miyuki replied, "We were visiting the Westland, which over there is the home of Light Elves. It's a bit... different there. It was less racial purity and more that I wasn't an elf. I had a friend who was half Dark Elf and half Night Elf and the other kids took to him very well."

Granted, her childhood friend was also quite charming if she recalled correctly and could make friends easily. Very out-going if she recalled.

"But some people, not everyone, will view you as something lesser if you're not at least an elf. They won't chase you out of town, or deny you business though. Far too practical for that, they'll just be really coldly polite to you, but they will be fair."

Shoneah wrinkled her nose. "Better than here, I guess," she murmured. She looked at Miyuki thoughtfully, then impulsively reached out and gave her a hug. "Don't worry about not coming with us," she told her with a smile. "It's a good thing that you value lives so much. And honestly ... I think most of us will feel better if you were here."

Her smile faded slightly and turned worried. "I just wish I could talk Andarien into doing the same," she sighed softly. "But he won't hear of it ... not with me going with them. Still ... he's got his pistol. At least he can stay back and hopefully at least a little out of danger."

Miyuki chuckled a bit at that, "He's worried about you, and he is logical about everything except when his own emotions are involved."

It was as if Andarien couldn't recognize at times his emotions were making him think illogically. Then again, he did always have trouble in that field.

"He'll have Eon and Zeus with him, not to mention PonyDash, they won't let anything happen to him."

"That's true," Shoneah mused. She grew quiet, thoughtful, and after a moment she murmured, "Can I ask you a favour while we're out? Will you watch over Xipil, make sure that he stays here? He wants to come with, but he's still so young ... it wouldn't be safe for him."

The young dragon's skin was still just that: skin. No scales yet, no real protection, and though he could breathe fire, it was only effective at a short distance.

"Of course," Miyuki nodded, "If he'll have me."

After all, she doubted there was much she could do to pry Xipil away from Shoenah if the dragon didn't want to be parted from her.

"I'll make sure he will." Shoneah smiled with relief. "He's not as stubborn as Uruloki, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem."

Andarien poked his head out of the dining room. "Coming for some breakfast?" he asked Shoneah.

She nodded at him. "Coming." She smiled at Miyuki again. "Thanks. I'll bring Xipil as soon as I've eaten."

And she headed towards the dining room once more.

Miyuki blinked for a moment before smiling and following in after Shoneah. Breakfast sounded good about now.

Everyone had gathered for breakfast, seeing as it was a long day ahead and for those who weren't leaving the tent, it was a chance to see loved ones before they left. Even though everyone was sure they would all come back, it didn't make the atmosphere any less tense.

It was a rather quiet and somber meal, and once everyone had finished, they all gathered up their weapons and prepared to leave.

It was quite the group that headed out: of course the regular people went - Kyrie, Earendil, Lin, Mailon, Jassin, Daeron, Wren and Shoneah; but in addition to them, Kaito, Andarien, Mirania, Lamruil, Lancaeriel, Cael, and even Lashrael - pregnant though she was - were going along. Jassin didn't look happy, but it was clear by the way that the two of them were interacting that he had at least accepted it. Of course, some of the Pokemon were also going - Eon, Zeus and Ponydash at least - and though he was still, at least for the moment, bonded with Kyrie, Uruloki would be a force to be reckoned with.

In addition to each person's personal weapons, Kyrie also carried with her the packages of powder her brother had given her.

Eron stayed back with Miyuki and the few others that did stay beind. At least they took their captive with them so there wasn't any worry about anyone having to look after him.

Lin kept close to Earendil as they travel farther away from the tent and towards their destination.

As they moved through the jungle, Kyrie explained her plan to the others. They would approach, surround the place, and at a signal from her, take out all of the guards at once. They couldn't rely on the sleeping powder: there was no way to know how many of the mercenaries would be outside their tents, and if they were inside then it would be a waste of the powder.

Once the guards were taken care of, they would sneak in - she and Mailon first, as they were the most experienced in matters such as these; and for as long as possible, they would kill in silence, from the shadows and from hiding places so that they could take care of as many of the mercenaries as possible before their presence became known. Once they were noticed, however, then it would be a free-for-all: whatever and however they could accomplish what needed to be done.

"If you've got something to put over your nose and mouth, you'd best put it on," she added. "That way you won't be put to sleep with them when the time comes to use the sleeping powder."

If it came at all.

"Try to stay in pairs," Jassin added seriously. "Watch each others' backs."

Cael would stay back with the prisoner. He was better at healing, but Lancaeriel's offensive magic was far more powerful than his. Once the main fighting was over, he would bring the prisoner into the camp so that he could show them anything that might be important.

Lin had thought about it before coming along and had brought a scarf with her in case she would need it. Though she didn't know if Earendil brought anything.

"Do you have anything?" Lin asked him.

Earendil glanced at Lin and fingered the neckerchief around his neck. "Set."

Once those who had something put it around their lower faces, Kyrie directed them to different places: she sent Daeron, Mailon, Jassin and Shoneah around to the four sides of the camp to take out the corner guards at her signal, while she and Lin would worry about the two stationed at the entrance. She sent Andarien with Shoneah, charging them with guarding the tiny hidden exit at the back of the camp while the rest of them went inside.

The others moved silently through the trees, and when Kyrie judged that they'd had enough time to get into position, she cupped her hands at her mouth and made a whip-pour-will call, waited a moment, and then gave it once more. Then, taking her bow and nocking an arrow, she timed her shot to coincide with Lin's, taking out the guard on the left. He fell without a sound, and she was glad to see the same thing happen to the remainder of the guards that were visible.

Lin followed suit, taking care of the other guard.

She was very grateful now at the foresight to learn archery. However, she couldn't pause, and got ready for the next thing, as those guards down would be discovered quickly by anyone still alive inside.

At a hand signal from Kyrie, the others headed towards the entrance, and they were quickly joined by Daeron, Jassin and Mailon, all without a sound. As they headed in, Lancaeriel cloaked them with a camouflage spell, which made them difficult to see but not impossible.

Inside the encampment, everything was laid out almost exactly as Shoneah had told them. Coming around the corner from the entrance was a row of tents. There were a few men standing in front of them, talking together, and it seemed that, as yet, no one had noticed the missing sentries. Kyrie stood with her back to the wall separating the entrance from the rest of the encampment and peered cautiously around it. Waiting until none of the mercenaries were looking, she motioned for everyone to move behind the row of tents so that they could attack from hiding places.

It was tense getting into place because there was always the fear that they would be spotted.

Lin crouched a bit as she hid behind one of the tents. The worse part about it, was this all had to be done in silence.

Kyrie was the last one to join them behind the tents, and she peered cautiously around one corner of the one she was behind. From there, they could hear a few conversations going on inside the tents they were behind, mostly about how long they would have to wait to hear about the next part of the job, or for reinforcements, or when their payment would arrive.

After listening for a moment, she motioned for Jassin and Lashrael to take the tent closest to the exit and for Mailon to join her in taking the one next to it. Then she gestured for the others to wait where they were but to keep alert: if anyone inside the tents would raise an alarm, the others would have to be quick in starting an all-out attack while they still had the element of surprise. Hopefully, however, those inside the tents would be taken care of in silence.

Lin waited with baited breath to see what would happen, this kind of quiet frontal attack was something she hadn't done before.

It was weird to be waiting in enemy territory like this and just not knowing what will happen next.

It was easy to tell when the four of them began their work: the conversations stopped suddenly and all went silent. Kyrie and Mailon were the first to return, and Jassin and Lashrael were not far behind.

After a quick tally, they came to a number: nineteen down, somewhere around twenty left.

"This is where it gets tricky," Kyrie told them all as quietly as she could, with all of them gathering close around her behind one of the tents. "The rest of them are gathered around the fires, or at least in that general area. They're not looking this way. Best chance is everyone get your ranged weapons ready and on my signal. Take down as many at range as you can."

Lamruil and Mirania exchanged a glance. Neither of them were fighters, but both were avid archers - they had to be, to live in a forest. So far they'd been able to stay out of the killing, but ... well, it was their time to join in.

The others were ready as well, and probably more so than the two from Quir. After all, the rest of them all had experience of one kind or another.

Kyrie looked around at them all one by one, waiting for them to show that they were ready, and one by one, they nodded to show that they were.

Getting into position, Lin readied her bow before nodding at Kyrie. Just twenty more, which was amazing really considering how they were quite out numbered.

She waited for Kyrie's signal to start.

There was a bit of shuffling as everyone (who had a bow) prepared themselves. If it would come to hand-to-hand fighting, Kaito would be able to join in while Mirania and Lamruil would have to back out, if they could - they simply weren't properly prepared for the other type of fighting.

Still, the rustle went unnoticed by the mercenaries, who were quite at ease in the perceived safety of their own fortified encampment.

Once everyone showed they were ready, Kyrie checked once more to make sure that no attention was being focused their way. Then she nodded for them to go.

As one, they stepped out from behind the tents, and without hesitation, Kyrie, Daeron, Mailon, Jassin, Lashrael, Mirania, Lamruil, Wren and Earendil all stepped out and took their first shots. Every arrow hit its mark: eight men went down. Wren and Lamruil had taken aim at the same man, which accounted for fewer men going down than arrows being shot.

There was a moment of stunned silence from the remaining mercenaries, and by the time they regained their wits and started to scramble for their weapons, the attackers were already preparing their second volley.

It was more of a killing ground than anything else Lin decided as she purposely picked off a man closest to his weapon on the second volley. As long as they kept shooting and it was hitting their mark, getting their weapon wouldn't do much good.

Then again, neither would running she thought grimly.

Still, some of the mercenaries were able to dodge the shots, and a few of them reached their weapons and a place of safety. One began to return fire, scattering the travelers to their own shelters - behind the tents once more, or behind a magical barrier for those nearest Lancaeriel.

"Keep their attention here," Kyrie directed the others, stepping back into some low brush. Keeping low, she started to skirt around to take the men from behind.
