Revisiting Garnelia - 120 4A

Post by Nara-pyon on Mon Jan 30, 2017 9:56 pm

A few weeks had passed since Andarien and Shoneah's wedding. When the two had appeared for breakfast the following morning, some had been surprised and others amused to see that overnight, Andarien had grown once more, and no longer had any trace of childhood about him - at least, not physically - and was just a little bit taller than he had been the day before. It meant that his clothes needed only a little bit of adjusting to fit him again - a welcome relief to those who knew how much he had grown in each of his previous growths.

After the wedding, talk had turned once more to traveling - specifically, to visiting Dekra, Garnelia again, so that Cael could visit his family (with his wife, of course), and so that Kyrie could see how things were going for her friend now that a year and a half had passed since Mari had retaken the throne. Once again, the topic rose of who would and would not be going.

As things stood, those who were expecting - with the exception of Lancaeriel, who had announced with great excitement two weeks after Shoneah and Andarien's wedding that she was also now expecting a child - were planning on staying in Makshim, and Wren and Khetal wanted to stay behind with them.

For those who hoped to go, then, the question became how they were going to travel. Walking, of course, but if the tent was going to be staying behind with the expectant families, they would need other sleeping and cooking arrangements.

"Of course, we could always expand just one tent for sleeping, and cook outside," Cael pointed out logically when the group had come together to discuss the idea.

"That's true and it's not like room making is particularly difficult," Miyuki replied, "We don't need a lot, just a place to sit, a place to sleep and a place to store enough provisions for the travel. If needed I can make additional rooms to give people privacy, that wouldn't take long."

Not when she was probably going to slap everything together on the fly unlike the main tent which was far more thought out. Though it was hard to tell after all these years of adding things.

"I would offer to help," Lancaeriel smiled apologetically, "but I'm afraid magic is out of the question for me for a while. At the very least, until the baby is born."

"I could always help out," Cael offered. "I do know how to make rooms, after all."

Most of the others hadn't seen the baby room he had added to his and Lancaeriel's suite, but it was as well done as the other rooms. Perhaps not as finished, as Daeron hadn't had the chance yet to finish the necessary furniture, but well on its way at least.

"That would be great," Miyuki grinned, "Let's do a count of who would like a room, and then just make a day of making rooms. Keep it simple, we'll just use the main part of the tent as the gathering spot and add doors around... ah.. the main tent might need to be wider and taller, but I think that would work."

It meant dismantling the original room built into the extra tent, but that wouldn't take long. Really the only important part of the tent was the inside, those tents (and the home tent) didn't even have a real floor in reality. If anyone somehow snuck under the tent or cut it open, they would only step into a bare floorless tent.

Miyuki knew this because she had peeked under one of her tents out of curiousity and the result amused her.

Cael looked around and counted.

"I suppose we should also ask if any of the single folk want to share rooms," he mused after a moment.

"We'll share," Shiro said immediately, thumbing towards his brother.

The only other singles who were planning on coming were Miyuki, Holly, Kyrie, Eron and Hikaru. Cael turned to them and waited for a response.

"Eron and I could room together," Hikaru glanced over at the (former?) chemistry teacher, "If that's okay with you?"

Eron nodded in agreement at this, "I don't mind."

"Then a room big enough for the three of us?" Miyuki asked Holly and Kyrie.

Holly nodded to this idea, the question was if Kyrie wanted her own room or was okay rooming with the rest of them.

"Works for me," Kyrie agreed. "And we will be taking shifts keeping watch again at night, though thankfully this time there is far less risk, I believe."

"I certainly hope so," Earendil agreed, his facial muscled twitching ever so slightly at the memory of what had happened the last time they'd been there.

"Then we're set," Cael grinned. "The only question left is when do we leave? I'm sure it won't take more than a day or two for Miyuki and I to get the rooms ready, and we've already plenty of supplies we can just grab."

"That's a good question...." Lin murmured, "Kyrie, is there a particular time you want to leave?"

Since they weren't in a hurry, but at the same time there wasn't much reason to linger longer than needed.

Kyrie tipped her head, thinking about the question. Honestly, to her it didn't make much difference. She did know, however, that her husband would like a bit of a heads up that she would be traveling again. He knew that she was going to be visiting Garnelia again soon, she had told him that weeks ago; but it wouldn't be enough simply to give him a day or two's warning.

"How about the beginning of next week?" she suggested. "Then those staying behind will have the opportunity to prepare anything they might want for while we're away."

After all, most of their hunters and cooks were leaving.

"That sounds fair," Lin agreed, "It'll give time for everyone else to prepare."

She too seemed to have realized that most of the hunters and cooks would be leaving. So making sure the group here was at least well stocked would be good.

"Want to do the tent tomorrow?" Miyuki asked Cael, "The sooner we do it, the sooner it's out of the way."

Then they wouldn't have a deadline hanging over their heads.

Cael turned to his wife, who took his arm and smiled at him bemusedly.

"Don't use me as an excuse to procrastinate," she chided him. "We can go into the city another day. We do have the rest of the week, after all, and the tent is important."

Cael chuckled softly and nodded before turning back to Miyuki. "Tomorrow, then," he agreed. "And we'll see if we can't get it all done in one day, yes?"

Miyuki resisted the urge to roll her eyes at Cael for that.

"I'm sure we'll be able to once we get into the full swing of it," Miyuki replied.

She didn't add that she was going to make a rough blueprint of where all the rooms should be so they wouldn't have to think about it too much tomorrow.

With the plans finalized, the group went their separate ways for the evening.

The following day, as promised, Miyuki and Cael worked on the tent they would be using while they traveled, and thanks to Miyuki's planning and foresight, they were able to finish it in the one day, as they had hoped. They then had another two days to prepare, both for themselves and for those who would be left behind, before at last they left, heading south for the Garnelian border once more.

The travel was for the most part uneventful - at least until they were only a few days out from Dekra, the capital city, which was also their destination.

They were just getting ready for the day's travel, and only a few of them had made it out of the tent, when Kyrie - always the first awake in the morning, as she insisted on taking the last watch each night - held up a hand to the others, cautioning them to be quiet. She said nothing herself, but looked intently into the forest, focused on one spot.

Everyone paused in what they were doing. Some were tense, ready to fight if needed, while others were ready to get out of the way.

Miyuki though, spread out her senses to see if she could sense something from the spot that Kyrie was looking in, she hadn't noticed anything before.

It would be only a small signature that Miyuki and Cael might sense, one so small that it might go unnoticed among their own - especially considering the magical auras of Cael and Lancaeriel, even when Lancaeriel wasn't using magic - and further away from the small signature was a little town that the group had passed by the day before.

It grew slowly closer, and soon movement was visible between the trees. Whatever or whoever it was, it was small and dark.

Before anything more became visible, a young voice could be heard. Only snippets were audible.

"... good idea? ... maybe ... but what if ..."

Holly's ears twisted about to try and catch the conversation better. She was grateful she decided to go without a bonnet today, otherwise she wouldn't be able to hear as well.

Actually she had begun to not wear the bonnet at all because it muffled her hearing and while traveling that was a bit dangerous.

Miyuki strained her senses, but with the bright auras of Cael and Lancaeriel (nevermind the magically inclined people such as Hikaru and Eron) it was hard to get anything else out of it.

Kyrie strained to listen better too, not daring to relax, despite the seemingly young age of the voice. After all, there was no telling who else might be there, too.

There was a pause in the conversation before it continued again.

"... do you think so? ... almost there, it never hurts to ask ..."

Shiro tensed and moved a bit closer to Holly. He didn't have any weapons but that didn't mean that he didn't feel protective.

From between the trees, there was a dull thud, followed momentarily by a soft, "Ow ..."

Lin blinked, "Did... they trip?" she asked softly so only those around her could hear.

It sounded like it, and they weren't trying to hide themselves. Maybe they had run across some travelers as well?

"Only one way to find out," Kyrie said, her brow furrowed with confusion. She stepped forward warily, sword drawn, to see what was going on.

Earendil hadn't been able to hear the distant conversation, and now that Kyrie was moving, he sidled up to his wife.

"What's going on?" he asked her as softly as he could and still hear her.

Andarien stayed back by the tent, one hand on his holstered pistol, but Shoneah drew her littinum katana and followed a few steps behind Kyrie.

"There's someone over there," Lin replied in turn, "Hopefully not hostile, I don't think so..."

Not from the sounds of it, they weren't trying to hide from what she could tell, even if they were being quiet.

Earendil nodded and followed after Kyrie and Shoneah cautiously.

As Kyrie and Shoneah approached a particularly large tree, Kyrie motioned for Shoneah to go around the other side. They circled the tree in opposite directions, moving slowly, weapons raised; but when they came around the other side, they both stopped in their tracks and lowered their weapons slightly as if stunned.

Shiro frowned slightly and one ear twitched involuntarily. He wanted to call out and ask what they'd found, but he didn't want to startle anyone.

Before anyone could say anything, however, Kyrie continued around the tree, sheathing her sword, while Shoneah turned back to the others and motioned to them that it was all right.

Hikaru frowned as he noticed Kyrie continue around the tree. Did they not find anything?

"No one is there?" he asked now that Shoneah gave the all clear.

They did hear someone, but if no one was there...

Shoneah looked back around the other side of the tree.

"Oh, there's someone here all right," she called back, sounding a little sad.

Kyrie reappeared a moment later, cradling a small dark elven boy in her arms. His clothes were ragged, torn and filthy, his skin stretched and tight.

"He's half starved," Kyrie said worriedly, bringing him back towards the group with Shoneah following behind her again. "He can't be more than six or seven years old!"

"Let's bring him back to the tent," Miyuki suggested, "We can treat him there and in fact we could do what we did before and travel with him inside and whoever needs to be with him."

After all they weren't prepared to deal with a neglected child, they would probably need items from a town.

"Hadn't we better check for whoever he was talking to?" Andarien asked, puzzled as to why they weren't.

Shoneah blushed. "I completely forgot when I saw him," she admitted. "I'll go look to see if anyone else is there."

She turned ahead headed back to look for another person, once more drawing her sword, just in case.

Kyrie did as Miyuki suggested and brought the boy directly into the tent, and a few of the others followed her in. There she simply laid him down on the floor and knelt next to him. He was awake, though his eyes were only half open.

"... funny house," he murmured, ignoring the faces around him.

Shiro was one of the people who had followed Kyrie and the boy inside, and he took the opportunity to get a better look at the boy. Behind his sallow skin and sunken cheeks, he noted some features that were far removed from any he had seen before in Arda. His face was round, rounder even than his aunt Nadya, who had a very pixie-ish face, and his were were of a different shape, too: more almond than round, and his eyebrows were slightly thicker than most elves'.

"He doesn't look quite elven," he commented with a thoughtful frown.
