"I have some brushes," Cael offered. Then he faltered. "At least ... I think I do. I don't remember what I brought with for the trip, and what I left back in the tent ..."

"I packed them for you," his wife spoke up calmly. "You tend to get antsy if you're in one place for more than a few days without your painting supplies."

Cael smiled and spread his hands in a there-you-have-it gesture. "Brushes."

"Then maybe while you're all getting that taken care of, I'll take Twig to rest for a while," Kaito spoke up, rising to his feet. He bent over and picked up the little boy, who had fallen asleep with tears on his cheeks, his skeletal frame shuddering every few moments with silent sobs, asleep though he was.

"Do you need help?" Lin asked as she watched Kaito.

"Excellent," Miyuki nodded, "So all I need is ink."

Then she would be ready to go, though it might take her a while. This wasn't an array she was overly familiar with.

"I will also need instruction," she glanced over at Lancerial, "Just a bit, this isn't an array I use often, I probably haven't seen it since the last time it was used."

Lancaeriel nodded at Miyuki. "Instruction I can help you with, or even do it with you," she agreed. "Just don't ask me to help you power it, is all."

Cael looked at Mari. "Then if you would be so kind as to show us a doorway which we might use without causing too much disturbance," he requested, "we would very much appreciate it."

The queen nodded. "I'll have Maravel show you a door you may use." She gestured to one of the servants, who bowed and left the room, most likely in search of her counselor.

Kaito started to shake his head at Lin, but then he reconsidered it. "Yeah, maybe help with directions and doors," he agreed. "Thanks."

"That's fine," Miyuki replied, "Between Cael, Hikaru, Shiro and myself we should be able to do this fine. Better than when it was just the two of us."

If she recalled correctly it had been just her and Lancaeriel when they last made a portal.

Lin got up from where she was sitting, "I think I can help with both."

At least she could help with the doors, and she was relatively sure she could help with the directions.

"Very true," Lancaeriel laughed softly. "That was taxing, indeed."

It had taken her several hours to recover - though it was thankfully far better than it would have been in she'd had to do it herself.

Kaito followed Lin towards the door, and then let her lead the way to wherever it was the tent had been put up. It was his first time in the castle, after all, and he didn't know it at all.

"Hey Lin," he said slowly as they walked down the hallway, "why do you think a kid this young would want to keep his name a secret?"

Lin frowned a bit and tried to remember what she could from her childhood. She had heard something about names, but she wasn't sure if that was the case.

"I don't really know, I know some cultures in Gaia believe names hold power. Mom might have mentioned it once that if you deal with the supernatural on a regular basis... whatever is supernatural in Gaian standards, that you don't want to give strangers your full name. You might not get it back."

She knew Yume Winters had dealt with the supernatural a lot when she was alive, but Lin didn't know if her mother believed the same. She doubted it, no one in the family ever not gave their full name to a strange before.

"I honestly doubt that's the case. It's more likely that it's either because his name is foreign sounding, like why Hikaru didn't use his real name, or maybe linked to his grandfather and why he died. Judging by what Gion said, he was probably human, and I can't imagine the General could have felt a human, an old human at that as much of a threat unless that old human had a reputation of some sort. Then again, his grandfather was killed by the man..."

"Old human?" Kaito repeated, glancing at Lin curiously. "Do you mean Twig's grandfather? Who said he was old? If he was killed soon after he got here, he might not be. Have been. Whatever."

He thought a bit more about what Lin had said, her suggestions as to why Twig might want to hide his true name from them.

"Do you really think that the supernatural is the same here as back home?" he murmured. "I mean ... it doesn't sound like there's any ... well ... not many powers at work here, besides the Valar ... and even the fact that there seem to be some ghosts or whatever is ... seems to be the exception, rather than the rule."

"Like I said, I doubt it," Lin replied, "And I just assumed he was old because Twig said that his grandfather ended up in this world one day and met Twig's grandmother. So he had lived in this world long enough to have grandchildren. Though I have no idea how old Twig himself is."

She went on to think about why Twig could have given a different name.

"He could have just not given his name out of distrust. With people not seeing his family, and him swearing they're alive... and I can only imagine how many people turned him out when he started talking to air, at least what it appears to them."

Actually now that she thought about it, what happened to the grandmother?

"There's a whole story we don't know anything about yet," Kaito reminded her. Then he conceded, "But I think you're right, he probably doesn't trust us. And there's nothing we can do about that for a while. Maybe that will change when Uncle Gion comes and helps us talk with Twig's family."

He fell silent for a moment as another possibility occurred to him.

"That is, of course, providing that his mother and grandfather are willing to tell us their stories."

"Hopefully," Lin agreed, "At least the grandfather seemed willingly, but that might have just been his way of trying to get through to Twig that he's no longer alive."

It must have been very difficult knowing there were limits to what spirits could do when interacting with the living.

Re: Revisiting Garnelia - 120 4A

While Kaito and Lin had brought Twig back to the tent to rest, the others had made plans with Gion to contact him again that evening - after he'd had a good night's sleep on his side of the world - to set a time when he (and Nadya) could come through the portal. After all, Gion wouldn't consider coming so far without his wife. By afternoon, the group had been shown a doorway they could use to create a portal, and with Lancaeriel's instruction, it was only a few hours before it was completed. That evening, they met again with Gion and made the plans to have him come through the portal first thing the next morning, when those who would be powering the portal would have had enough rest that it wouldn't be as difficult for them.

As promised, the following morning, as soon as breakfast was over, those who had offered their strength for the portal met in the old treasury, where the doorway between the main room and a smaller room had been prepared for the portal.

While Cael waited for the others to arrive, Lancaeriel was fielding questions from her young sister-in-law, Iadrim, about magic and her experiences with it. Somehow, it amused Shiro to see the young woman chattering so energetically with the ancient mage. Usually it was Cael who was eager to answer questions, but for once the man seemed to be lost in thought, staring silently at the runes that covered the doorway's wooden frame.

"Is everything alright?" Hikaru asked, noticing how unusually quiet Cael was.

It had been interesting to watch Miyuki do the runes on the door. Even though he knew logically it was her specialty it was another to see her at work. Even though she had to stop and ask for confirmation a few times as it was her first time doing that particular array herself.

"Hm?" Cael blinked and looked at Hikaru, a startled expression briefly appearing on his face before he smiled and relaxed. "Ah, sorry. Thinking."

He looked back at the runes again. "It just never ceases to amaze me, the things that are possible to do when runes are used. This, for example, linking two distant places, bringing them together temporarily to allow the transportation of people and objects ... this is new for me, something I have never attempted, and would never have thought possible until I learned about it from Lan."

He grinned at Hikaru. "I feel like a child again, ready to open a birthday gift. Well, in earlier lives, anyways, not with the General as my guardian."

"I have to admit, I don't know much about rune work myself. All I know it requires a bit more precision and understanding that I think I had patience for growing up," Hikaru admitted.

He did have a magic education, but he had stuck with the basics of illusions and fire.

"It takes a long time and a lot of study," Cael murmured. He spotted Kaito coming into the room and waved a greeting, which the neko returned. "The nuances are ... yes. Intricate. I don't know what it's like in your world, but here it took us - Lan, the other druids and me - hundreds of years of research and discovery ... and centuries more to really work them out. We're still discovering new possibilities. Honestly, I'm amazed that Miyuki has learned as much as she has in such a short time. She's quite young, after all."

Kaito joined the men. "Waiting on Miyuki?" he asked, looking around. "Shiro thought maybe I could help too, Andarien says I've got a bit of a glow myself."

Re: Revisiting Garnelia - 120 4A

Hikaru wondered if one of the reasons why Miyuki had learned so much was because she always had an idea of what she wanted to learn. She seemed to be out to replicate every single piece of Gaian technology using magic. Of course, he had heard in passing she was a stage grower and stage growers tended to be like sponges because they grew fast. So she could be much younger than her seven tails suggested.

Most kitsune who were at seven tails were at least a century old. Though he personally thought the nature of growing up in this world would create far more experiences. Honestly, a nine tails at his age was kind of on the young side (younger considering when he reached his ninth tail).

"Every bit helps," Hikaru replied tearing himself away from his thoughts.

At that moment, Miyuki came in, she had been mentally resting herself before hand because writing an array that detail and big was a bit tasking on her. Especially because it was new to her.

"Oh, good!" Iadrim exclaimed suddenly, noticing that Miyuki had arrived. Excited, she tugged on her sister-in-law's arm. "Lancaeriel, they're all here now! I get to watch, right?"

"Yes, you get to watch," Lancaeriel laughed, pulling her hand away from Iadrim's and placing in on the girl's shoulder. "Calm down. They need to concentrate."

Cael chuckled at his sister and motioned for the others to gather around.

"Finger tips are enough," he told them, motioning for Shiro and Kaito to join him on his side of the door frame. "As long as you can touch it, you can power it."

He gestured for Miyuki and Hikaru to go to the other side of the door frame to help. They had to keep the doorway clear for Gion and Nadya after all.

Lancaeriel pulled Iadrim back from the doorway, keeping one hand on her shoulder, just in case.

Miyuki and Hikaru moved to the other side of the door frame. Miyuki crouched down so she wouldn't get in Hikaru's way. Finger tips touched the rune array and the runes began to glow as they were activated.
