Aeris' eyes grew wide when she saw the creature.

"What is that?" she asked, looking over her shoulder at Allan. "I've never seen or even heard of anything like it before!"

It was both beautiful and mysterious, and very intriguing.

"I... have no clue," Allen admitted, "But since we're in this forest, it's probably a fey creature of some sort. Wisp talked about people ending up in the wilds, but residents of the wilds can end up in our plane as well. Though often they have more control over it than we do."

So they were less likely to be stuck on the Material plane, unlike people from the Material plane who ended up in the Fey Wilds.

"Is that because they're magical creatures?" Aeris asked. "Or because they come from a land of magic, and are coming to a land with less magic?"

She didn't know if Allan would be able to answer her questions, but she figured it would at least be worth asking.

"That maybe more of a Wisp question, but I suspect it might be due to where they come from. Our world, is very predictable in a lot of ways, the Fey Wilds, not so much sometimes... Being from that world, I suspect that they're better at dealing with that unpredictable nature of the wilds. But that's my theory, Wisp has been dealing with the wilds nearly her whole life."

So it wasn't a good answer, since he admitted he didn't really know how it worked.

Aeris thought about it. If the Fey Wilds were unpredictable, then of course it made sense that the time for returning home would be unpredictable after a while. And if the Material plane was predictable, then it made sense that those visiting from the Fey Wilds would have a better chance of returning home where and when they wished.

But then the question was, was it the creatures who had more control? Or was it simply the nature of the situations, the planes themselves?

"Perhaps I'll remember to ask her when we see her again," she murmured thoughtfully.

The forest road splits, with a smaller path going down between the trees. The cart would not be able to fit through there, but people walking single file could. As they pasted the path, Risa put her hand on Allen's arm to stop him.

Out of the corner of her eye she saw the back of a hobgoblin disappear down that path. She, Allen and Reed could hear the footsteps of the creature.

"Hobgoblin?" Risa looked to Allen.

Allen leaned back in the cart to try and peer down the path better, "It looks like it, I think it has something captive, but it disappeared down that path too quickly for me to see."

Neither Aeris nor Zoltan had heard or seen anything, and while Zoltan was always ready to go after something, Aeris still had Wisp's warning in her ears.

"Are you sure we should leave our things and go after it?" she asked. "I mean, captive is bad, yes, but ... Wisp told us not to leave the path ... and we would have to leave the cart here, and the horses ..."

Zoltan cracked his knuckles. "I'm always up for a hobgoblin," he grinned.

"Well... technically," Reed commented, "She said to stay on the paths, and that does look like a path yes?"

It was, it was a very worn path that looked like it hadn't been used in a long while. Chances were the path use to be wider until the trees grew in.

Allen carefully set down the reins and hopped off the cart, "We should at least check it isn't a person. Hobgoblins aren't known to eat people, but goblins are."

And where a hobgoblin was, the latter might not be that far away.

Zoltan hopped out of the cart. "Then le's ge' goin', afore they're gone an' we canna find 'em again," he urged the others.

Aeris was a bit more careful as she climbed to the ground. "Well, I didn't see anything," she murmured, "so perhaps someone else should lead the way. Someone who did see."

She looked towards Allan and touched the crystal around her neck.

"I'll lead," Allen agreed, and then patted Sugar on the neck, "And you stay here and watch the cart alright girl?"

Reed and Risa carefully dismounted from the cart as well, since everyone would need to go. Hobgoblins were potentially dangerous.

The horse nickered at him and messed with his hair a bit before letting the ranger go. He led the group to the path, the path was easily hidden by the trees, but one could make out the stones that once paved this part of the road that now were barely there.

"Stay quiet," he told them before leading them onwards into the forest.

"Abou' time somethin' happened on this trip," Zoltan muttered under his breath as Allan headed off.

He let Aeris go ahead of him so that he could bring up the rear. Aeris followed directly behind Allan.

Reed followed, letting Zoltan take the rear as the group followed Allen down the path. There didn't seem to be any signs of the hobgoblin now. The trees seemed to close in on the group as they had long ago overtaken the road. They continued on this path for several minutes until the path finally opened up again.

Allen stopped and held out an arm to motion for them to stop. Risa carefully stepped around to stand beside Allen, to see what he was seeing. Reed moved out of the way to allow Aeris and Zoltan to come off the path. The path lead to a small clearing which held the ruins of an old tower that had long since crumbled. The path here though could be seen better.

At the path's bend was the hobgoblin from earlier, over his shoulder was a long stick from which what looked to be mounds of leaves hanging from them. The hobgoblin was talking to a bugbear and to the bugbear's left was a goblin.

"Found more of them?" the bug bear asked gruffly.
The hobgoblin lifted his stick, "See of yourself."

At his lifting, the mounds turned out to be creatures that looked like they were made out of leaves and flower buds, their muzzles had twine wrapped around them to keep them shut. It was hard to tell at first, but they looked almost fox like in shape.

Aeris' eyes widened with wonder when she saw what the hobgoblin had. Though she didn't recognize the creatures, they were one of the most amazing things she had ever seen.

Zoltan's lip curled at the sight of the goblin, hobgoblin and bugbear, and he slowly reached for a javelin, preparing to throw it.

"Poaching, of course," Allen grumbled as he reached for his long bow.

Risa did the same as the distance between them and the creatures was about 40 feet give or take a few, well within the range of a long bow.

"So we're attacking then?" Reed wanted to double check as he put his hand on the hilt of his rapier.

"Yes, they're poaching flower foxes, which is a big no, not sure what they thing they're going to do with them though," Allen muttered.

Zoltan's eyes narrowed, and without waiting, without giving the others time to do anything else, he stretched his arm back, aimed, and threw his first javelin. It fell short, landing behind the hobgoblin and sticking out of the ground.

Aeris was just as angry as the others about the poaching, and before any of the poachers noticed the javelin, she grasped her new arcane focus and thrust one hand forward. With a whisper, three magical darts shot forward at the hobgoblin. It was taken by surprise, yowling in pain as the three missiles hit it in the arm and torso. It dropped the poke with the flower foxes and grabbed at its injured arm as if still in great pain.

Aeris hoped she had broken something.

To get closer to them and to get a better angle of attack, she moved around the others and followed the path to where it turned towards the poachers.

As soon as she had moved, Zoltan spotted an opening between some trees directly in front of him, and he moved towards it, hoping that he would have a better view for his next attack as well.

Unlike the others, Reed didn't have a long range attack. He headed downwards in hopes of finding a good chance to rush forward and attack. He drew his rapier to prepare himself for an attack.

Risa joined Aeris in order to get a more open shot of the hobgoblin. She let an arrow loose only to find that it was stopped by the chainmail the hobgoblin wore. The creature was still in shock from being hurt. The flower foxes had made a muffled yelped when they were dropped and were wiggling to try and get out of their bindings.

Allen was no better though what prevented his kill was the fact the hobgoblin, not stupid enough to be caught unaware three times had raised its shield and blocked his arrow.

Zoltan dashed forward, opting to go for his tried and true: his greataxe. He ran towards the hobgoblin, yelling at it (why not, since they had clearly been seen now?), and when he came close enough, he swung at it with all his might - and missed. The greataxe whiffed by the hobgoblin's ear.

Frustration at himself welled up inside Zoltan, and a wild rage built up inside of him.

Aeris dashed further ahead so that she had a better line of sight on the three creatures, and when she was ready, she steadied herself. With a shout, she thrust her hands forward again, and this time it was an icy knife that was projected forward. It hit the Bugbear and shattered, splintering the bugbear and goblin with icy shards. The goblin shrieked and fell to the ground, somehow dead from the single hit.

The hobgoblin, already with its shield up, managed to duck away in time not to be hit by the ice.

Reed rushed out and joined Zoltan, he thrust his rapier at the hobgoblin that everyone had been trying to hit, only to have the creature dodge his strike. He cursed under his breath at it. It was a tricky creature it seemed.

The hobgoblin seemed to realize that people were out to get him as he dodged another of Risa's arrows. However his luck ran out when he took an arrow in the neck from Allen, it collapsed as it drowned in its own blood. The half elf sighed in relief and muttered something about it being about time it hit.

During this fight, no one realized (because they couldn't see into the ruins of the tower, that there had been another hobgoblin present. It raised it's long sword with both hands and brought it down. Bringing her arm up to protect herself, Aeris cast shield, causing the sword to bounce harmlessly off of her.

The bugbear stepped over the body of it's dead ally and raised it's morning star and swung it at Zoltan only to have it swing harmless over his head. The dwarf would be able to feel the wind from that.

Zoltan lifted his greataxe again and this time he swung at the bugbear - but again, he missed, nearly losing his balance from the power of his swing.

Aeris was focused on the hobgoblin that had attacked her. With a word and a flick of her fingers, she sent three magic missiles at it, each of them catching it and hitting it hard. Bam bam bam! She could hear bones snapping under the force of the hits, and the hobgoblin shrieked in pain. It was still alive, but it was not at all well-off.

Reed lunged forward and stabbed the bugbear in the side, the creature roared in anger at the bard. That had been much easier than the hobgoblin thankfully.

Allen let loose another arrow and hit the bugbear in the shoulder. It was moving sluggishly now but it was still alive even after that hit.

Risa moved to get a better view of the hobgoblin to try and help Aeris. She took aim and managed hit the creature in the eye. It clawed at it's eye before it fell over and died on the spot.

The bugbear, sluggish as it was, still managed to raise it's morning star above it's head and bring it down on Zoltan. Though Zoltan bears the hit through his rage.

Zoltan was furious, even considering his rage. He dropped his greataxe - his usual weapon of choice - and pulled out his two hand-axes instead. They were smaller, lighter, and faster - and sure enough, the first one struck true, hitting the bugbear straight in the face and leaving a hole between its eyes and along one cheekbone.

Immediately, the light went out of its eyes, and a strangled gasp left its lungs as it sunk, lifeless, to the ground.

"Abou' time, ye filthy skunk!" he yelled at it, yanking his handaxe from its head. For good measure, he dealt it a solid kick.

He looked around to see what else was left, but it seemed the battle was over. Since that was the case, he knelt down to loot the bugbear. He picked up its morning star, but the only other thing that he found was a set of keys in its pocket.

"Huh," he grunted, and took a closer look at them.

Aeris made sure that there was nothing else coming to surprise them, then knelt next to the hobgoblin beside her and emptied its pockets. She found the longsword it had used to attack her, a longbow (thankfully it hadn't used that against her!), a bunch of arrows, and several coins: 35 copper, 53 silver, 11 slectrum, and 24 gold.

She put it all into her bag so that it could be divided later.

"You know," she mused, pushing herself to her feet again, "we never did discuss what we were going to do with what we found. We know we can take whatever we find as payment, but how are we going to share it amongst ourselves? Everyone keeps what they find? Or share it all as evenly as we can?"

"A' leas' give weapons to those tha' ca' use 'em," Zoltan called back right away. "No poin' in an'one keepin' somethin' they canna use."

Allen hurried over to the flower foxes and worked to get them loose form their bindings. They hurried to their feet no worse for wear considering they were dropped. He didn't answer Aeris' question since there were other concerns at the moment.

As he checked each one for injury he called over his shoulder to Risa, "Check the ruins and make sure they weren't collecting more."

Reed carefully put his rapier away, as he watched Allen worked, "Probably for coin it can be divided, anything useful we can see who is interested in it, and if it's not useful to sell and divide the sellings later."

Aeris nodded at Reed's suggestion. "That makes sense to me."

She moved to check the other hobgoblin to see what it had on it. It had the same equipment as the other hobgoblin, but only 10 copper pieces. The goblin didn't have anything of interest either, just some tiny bird bones.

Zoltan meanwhile looked up when he heard Allen instruct Risa to check the tower. "I'll come wi' ye," he told Risa. "I foun' some keys on this'un, they migh' be useful in there."

He tossed the keys in the air, caught them again, and headed towards the tower with her.

"Well..." Allen murmured as he scratched one under the chin, "You don't seem too worse for wear."

The fox yipped and the others, happy to be free were snuggling up to him. Clearly, despite it all they weren't afraid of people.

"Hopefully," Risa agreed.

Risa rounded the corner of what use to be the entrance of the tower. Inside, in small cages stacked on top of each other were more flower foxes, all huddled and shivering in their cages. There were locks on the cages and a total of six foxes in all.

Zoltan scowled at the sight of the cages.

"No one should ever be in a cage," he growled, trying the keys in the locks until they all opened. "No one bu' criminals."

Least of all such innocent creatures as these.
