No one much wanted to talk after that, so as people finished eating, Kyrie divvied up the watch schedule for the night. Being as there were enough of them, they split into four shifts of two people each. Once that was done, people drifted off to bed.

The following day, tempers were overall much better, and the conversation as they traveled was friendly and lighthearted once more. The day after that, they had only been traveling for half the day when Uri, Jabek, Talmon and Sabor started to grow quieter once more. Shoneah thought she knew the reason why. She was starting to recognize the area they were in: they were nearing the men's village. And while she was sure they were eager to see their families again, there would be no getting around the fact that they would have to tell three women that they were now widows.

Eron too began to recognize their surroundings, they were getting close to the village. He wasn't sure what to expect really. Only that this wasn't going to be a fully happy occasion, despite the fact the dragon was gone and at least someone was coming home.

As the group approached the village, several women could be seen working the ground where the fields had been before. They were still hard to see against the earth they were working - brown on brown on brown - but there were children around them, some of them playing, some of them helping out, dressed in brighter colours than their mothers.

The homes were a bit more obvious than the last time Shoneah and Eron had been there. Rather than furs covering the doorways, there was nothing to cover them, and black scorch marks framing the rock around them.

It was strange, it was just like they had left it but at the same time it was not. The women were working in the fields, but it was clear the fields had taken a beating from the attack, and being able to see the scorch marks brought it home how this place had been attacked.

Miyuki looked, taking everything in because she was curious more than anything else.

"Why are only the children in bright clothing?" she asked.

Sabor smiled faintly. "Well, it's their preference," he murmured simply. "They don't mind getting their clothes dirty. The women prefer to keep their colourful clothes for when they're not working."

Suddenly one of the children spotted the group and shouted out to the others. Immediately, all of the women and children started towards them, searching for their husbands or fathers.

Uri, Sabor, Talmon and Jabek broke into a run and met their wives with open arms. The other women's expressions became more and more panicked as they searched the faces of the rest of the group in vain for their husbands.

Lin lingered back with Earendil and the others to give the hunting part some time to reunite and to break the bad news. She could see the panic look on some of the women's faces. Taking Earendil's arm, she was reminded of their own close call those few seasons back.

Earendil put both arms around Lin and held her close, not only giving her reassurance that they were still together, but taking the same reassurance for himself. He knew what he had, and he was grateful every day that they were together. He couldn't imagine not being with her anymore.

Kyrie stepped forward to speak with everyone there, and it was she who broke the news to the widows, saving the men from the unpleasant task. It didn't come as a surprise, though that fact didn't make it any easier for the women. Or their children.

After a while, Kyrie rejoined the group. "We are welcome to stay here for a while," she told them quietly. "I think we should give them what supplies we can afford to help them get back on their feet again. Unfortunately there's not much we can do to help with the fields - that's their specialty, we would only get in the way. But food and furs ... we have plenty of those. If it's all right with all of you, I'd like to give them what we can."

Her suggestion was met with nods all around.

Miyuki nodded in agreement with this, "We've had an unexpected windfall, it won't be a problem to offer what we can. We can get more later and store it easily."

That was the main point, they could store whatever they caught easily and drag it around with them, which was why they had food and furs to spare.

"If you want, I can go through the stock I brought from Makshim, it wouldn't be a lot of food, but it would be something different and new. Maybe lift a few spirits," she offered.

The only food that wasn't used on their trip was the stuff Miyuki had brought to peddle in other areas, spices, fruits, veggies and the occasional meats that she had been told could only be found in the last area they were in. Ingredients to make some Gaian things as well (she had spent the last Winter freezing water and making a bit of ice cream).

Kyrie shook her head. "No, just hold on to that, you can use it later," she told her softly. "We can give them most of the meat we got from the dragon. It would be enough to last us months on end, we don't need it anyways."

She smiled and put one hand on Miyuki's shoulder. "Thanks for the thought, though."

Her hand still on Miyuki's shoulder, she looked around at the others. "We should set up the tent. Hopefully here we won't have to keep the same vigil at night, but perhaps one person wouldn't hurt."

"What will the schedule be for the shifts then?" Lin asked.

Knowing that would be good before they set up camp.

Miyuki nodded, "And where shall we set up?"

"You deserve a full night with your husband," Kyrie told Lin with a faint smile. "You don't worry about it tonight."

She inhaled deeply and let it out slowly. Considering Miyuki's question, she turned towards the small village. The fields were out of the question - they needed to keep the ground there clear so it could be worked again. Yet there wasn't much other space between the two cliffs that made up the walls of the valley that these people called home.

"Just there, I think, Miyuki," she pointed at last, indicating an area of flat land next to one of the cliff faces, between two doorways. "It's about as out of the way as we can get here."

Looking around quickly herself, Miyuki would have to agree.

"Good thing the tent isn't ridiculously huge then," she grinned as she went to work.

It was a good thing it was only one tent. Once the tent was set up they could get out the supplies to give to the village.

Only a few people needed to set up the tent, which was one of its benefits, and Earendil and Lin offered to help Miyuki this time. In the meanwhile, Kyrie had gone to the villagers to see what sort of supplies they might be in need of. Shoneah walked along the valley, inspecting the damage sadly, and Andarien went with her, his Pokemon trailing behind.

Daeron made sure Iorlas and Amir were settled, and then he looked around and sighed. He looked as though he wanted to say something, but there was something holding him back, preventing the words from passing his lips.

Kaito cursed softly. "You know, we hear about things like this all the time," he muttered, "but it's another thing to see it firsthand."

Shiro glanced at him, then looked back at the village. He remained silent. There was nothing else to add, in his opinion.

Wren was also silent, and as she looked around, there were tears pooling in her eyes.

Miyuki had focused on the tent, mainly because focusing on the damage caused to the village would be too much. It was a bit frustrating not being able to do much more to help. There just wasn't anything else that could be done other than give supplies.

Once she was done, she let her Pokemon go wander about, with her following after them.

By the time Miyuki had finished with the tent, Shoneah and Andarien had finished wandering the village. It was very small, after all, having been home to only seven families, three of which were now broken families.

"I don't think I've ever seen anything like this, Mi," Andarien confided to his sister, his chin trembling as he and Shoneah joined her. "Even Garnelia wasn't like this."

"When we were in Garnelia it was a city," Miyuki murmured softly, "Cites can have dozens and upwards to hundreds of people. Villages like this one the number can be very small so when something bad happens..."

And it was different, the General had been around for centuries so the society, no matter how bad had time to adapt.

"It would be kind of like if Haven had been hit..."

While Haven's population was much bigger everyone knew each other, which she figured also made a large difference.

Andarien's brow furrowed, and he half frowned. He had heard of Haven, but he had never been there. He couldn't even imagine it, really. The way people described it, it was unlike any place he had yet been.

"Haven?" Shoneah asked curiously, looking to Miyuki for an explanation.

"Haven is a ranch in a place called the Borderlands that sit between the borders of the other countries, though their taxes go to the Westland government," Miyuki explained, "In the past small number of families had settled there and there had been from my understanding a very, very small village, but most of the original families living there no longer do. Haven was founded by our grandfather who set it up to hunt slavers, and though that isn't needed anymore it's still quite a place with many people living there on the ranch. They mainly sell horses now, and in honesty it's not really a village... but everyone knows everyone else, and they all live there..."

Though it made her wonder if one day it might turn into a village now that it wasn't needed for slaver hunting.

Shoneah nodded. "So ... bigger than this," she murmured, nodding at the village they were in. If it was even really big enough to be called a village. All told, even before half the men had been killed, there were less than twenty people. She sighed softly. With more people, they would have had an easier time recuperating ... but as things were ...

"Will they even survive with so few?" she asked quietly.

"I don't know," Miyuki admitted, "If worse comes to worse, I suppose they might move where there are more people if it comes down to that."

She figured that was how very small settlements ended up ceasing to exist.

"It also depends on what their kids do when they get older."

If they stayed or moved away.

Shoneah nodded slowly. "I spend a day here with Eron, back when we'd first arrived in this world," she said quietly. "We didn't get to see a whole lot, but we were able to ask some questions. It seems that when the children grow up, the different villages get together to introduce the young adults to each other ... if there are marriages, the couple usually goes to the village of the man, though occasionally to the village of the girl."

She shrugged. "Perhaps the village will grow through marriage. Perhaps they will join another village entirely. Who knows? For now, I think their only focus will be on surviving."

Miyuki nodded at this, so it seems.

It was kind of a depressing thing to think about, hopefully the supplies they could afford to part with would be able to help the little village get back on it's feet.

The afternoon and the following day were both spent in curing the meat of the dragon that they were going to leave with the villagers who were still left, and only on the third day since their arrival did the group leave once more.

"We've deviated a bit from where I had planned to take us," Kyrie told the others as they set off, leaving the village behind, "so we've a few choices ahead of us. We could go back to the original route I'd planned, or we could just keep going from here, or ... if there's anything in particular that anyone would like to see ...?"

She looked around at them, clearly asking for their input.

Most people looked as though it didn't make much difference to them, but Shoneah hesitated and looked as though she wanted to ask something.

"There's nothing I can think of, but then again," Miyuki murmured, "We don't really know this place that well. It's our first time... well most of us."

She looked over to Eron and Shoneah.

"Is there any place in mind that either of you know of?"

Shoneah glanced briefly at Eron before looking back at Miyuki and then Kyrie. "Well ... if no one objects, I could always use some more gunpowder," she said slowly. "I know it means visiting a volcano, but ..."

To her surprise Kyrie smiled. "To tell the truth, I'm nearly out of black powder myself," she said cheerfully. "If no one else objects, I think it would be quite doable."

She looked around. "Anyone?"
