Wandering Through Wolsic - 119 4A Empty Wandering Through Wolsic - 119 4A

Post by Nara-pyon Sun Jun 15, 2014 8:49 pm

It took nearly four weeks for the massive group of travelers to cross Shiezin and reach the borders of Wolsic, and there were no incidents on the way. Kyrie led the group safely even through some potentially dangerous passages. She, Daeron, Wren and Shoneah all helped to make sure they were never wanting for food. Earendil followed their progress on the maps that he had received from Kyrie, discussing the route with her and Lin at length. Lancaeriel harvested edible plants along the way, adding spices and flavours to the food to make even the same food taste different every day. Cael stuck close to his wife. Iorlas took careful care of Amir, who didn't like being carried all the time anymore. Kaito was Kaito, annoying some and helping others. Andarien worked in his forge every chance he got, though everyone kept an eye on him to make sure he got all the rest he needed as well - including his Pokemon. Eon was as protective as ever, Zeus as competitive, and Kaede as playful, and as bad with directions. Even Ponydash got all the exercise he wanted now that they were on the move again, and from time to time he would give Amir a ride, since allowing him to walk would only slow them down. Still, it was Shiro who held them back the most: they would have to stop for him every once in a while and let him catch up, because no matter where they were or how much of a hurry they were in, he invariably found something that he wanted to stop and investigate.

They passed through forests, over rocky hills, along steep cliffs and ledges, through meadows and across plateaus: across all kinds of terrain and through all types of plants.

Yet as they traveled the weather didn't grow much warmer: by the time Spring (and the New Year) arrived, it still felt like mid-Stirring because all the time they were traveling, they were heading north and east towards Wolsic, a country quite a bit further north than Makshim had been.

It was easy to see when they had arrived at the border. There were signs every several meters with runes carved into them. Those who could read the runes would recognize the name of the country, along with the warning: Hostility Forbidden.

"Well... that's... promising...." Miyuki murmured at the signs.

A completely understandable warning, it was just interesting there would be signs with such a warning. During the four weeks traveling she had spent time learning about the edible plants and spices that Lancaeriel used. Knowing what they were helped a lot in case she picked up said plants and spices from the market in the future. Otherwise, she just spent her time training and working on plant magic, having taken a break from runes for now.

Really, she had created most of the runes on her to-do list, so she was trying to figure out what else was there to she might want to make.

"Do where the signs are, this is generally the path most people take to the nearest city?" Lin asked.

"Sometimes," Kyrie replied, barely glancing at the sign as she led the group forward into Wolsic. "But really I think they're posted around the entire border of the country to remind people that if they show up with hostile intentions, they've forfeited their lives. The Earth Elves are a peaceful people, but they won't let anything threaten that and they'll defend themselves fiercely."

She checked herself. "Then again," she added, "they don't really have cities. Or rather, they just don't. They live in villages, settlements ... small, all of them. Some are families, others are groups that came together by chance. Each one led by someone they choose. Some of them move around, others find safety in caves or cliff sides and stay put. They're a diverse people, united in three things."

She held up one hand and began to tick them off on her fingers as she revealed them. "First, their love of peace. Second, their zeal for keeping to themselves, no intermarriages allowed. And third, their love of stories."

"Love of stories?" Miyuki asked.

Somehow that seemed a bit more random than the first two. At least she knew where the first two were coming from. She wondered if they had some sort of oral tradition.

"Stories," Kyrie grinned. "You know ... once the day's work is done, sit around the fire, eat, drink, and share stories. Real, made up - they don't care. They just like stories. Not as much as the Earth Elves in Kelxit, but still, they like stories."

"Then it sounds like we're in the right type of business," Iorlas laughed softly. "Do they trade supplies for stories?"

Kyrie chuckled. "They'll trade just about anything if the story is good enough."

"We can work with that," Miyuki nodded in agreement.

She had to wonder though what sort of stories they had, since Kyrie had mentioned they didn't care if it was real or made up. Fiction, wasn't that common from her understanding, at least not in the realm of books.

They pressed on along the path, heading steadily northeast, and soon the trees began to thin out.

"If we continue north we'll be out of the trees entirely," Kyrie told the others, "and we'll stop there for the night. In the trees, it's too easy to have things sneak up on you. Foxes, bears ..."

"Raccoons, dragons," Shoneah continued the list dryly, glancing at Eron and smiling.

Kyrie chuckled. "Yes. We'll have to have two people on watch at all times tonight."

Eron chuckled and nodded at this. The traveling through this land had taught them quite a bit about what wild life to expect here.

"Understood, how many shifts?" Lin asked.

Kyrie had to think about that. Until now, they'd been doing single-person shifts; but with the wildlife in Shiezin, that had been possible. Wolsic was just more dangerous at night.

She of course would help out, and Daeron and Wren and Lin, she was sure, would be willing. Cael probably would be too, and even though he wasn't good with weapons, he did have his magic, and so did Lancaeriel when it came down to it. Kaito was a possibility, though she wasn't sure she trusted him to stay awake. Andarien was too childlike, and Miyuki ...

Well, she didn't know about Miyuki. Then again, Miyuki didn't know any offensive magic except plant magic, which would slow something down but wasn't really a very reliable defense. And when it came to weapons, as far as Kyrie knew, Miyuki didn't know any ranged weapons.

"Three," she said finally. "Three hours each. Cael and Lancaeriel, if you two don't mind taking the first shift ..."

"Not at all," Cael replied with a smile.

Kyrie nodded. "I'd prefer the third shift, and I'll need someone to watch with me. Then there's the graveyard shift, two more for that. Daeron, Wren, Lin - any preferences?"

"I can take a shift," Earendil began to say; but Kyrie cut him off with a shake of her head.

"No, Earendil, you can't," she told him flatly. "And you know it. I know you'd like to but it's not safe."

Lin really did feel sorry for Earendil, simply because he wasn't use to not being able to do what everyone else did.

"I'll take the third shift with you Kyrie," Lin told her.

This allowed her to spend the most time in bed and so she would just be waking really early. If she needed more sleep, well she could use her husband as a pillow later.

Earendil clenched his jaw and turned away, but his anger wasn't directed at anyone, just the situation. He hated not being able to do the things he'd used to.

Kyrie just nodded at Lin. "Thanks. Daeron and Wren, any problems with the middle shift?" she asked, turning towards the two.

"None," Wren replied with a smile.

"That works for me," Daeron agreed. He looked at Lancaeriel and Cael. "Just don't wake Iorlas or Amir when you get me."

"I will be silent as the grave," Cael promised, one hand over his heart in mock seriousness.

Andarien looked around at all the adults. "Why don't I ever get to watch?" he asked. "My hearing is good ..."

Shoneah smiled to herself. She had noticed that she hadn't been asked to watch either, but rather than complaining, she was simply looking forward to a full night of sleep.

"It's more than just good hearing," Lin explained to Andarien, "It's keeping your attention throughout your whole shift without fail, and if something or someone does attacked. Now only would you be the first to warn the others, but also the first to defend or fight if needed."

She leaned over at Andarien and grinned.

"In truth I'll admit the hardest apart is attention, especially when everyone else is asleep."

Andarien's face flushed, and he couldn't bring himself to meet Lin's gaze. He knew he wasn't good at paying attention, and he especially wasn't good at fighting or defending - though his Pokemon could help him with that, if only people would give him a chance.

"Just keep practicing with your bow and your sword," Earendil told his son, putting one hand comfortingly around his shoulders. "If you keep it up, someday you'll be able to help out."

"Yeah, right," Andarien muttered.

Lin patted Andarien on the arm, "You already help out, just in different ways."

She could tell that Andarien was bothered by it, probably by what she said was required, because it got him thinking about where he lacked. It was awfully easy to get him to think along those lines (almost too easy).

"And most of us," Eron added, "Won't be taking a shift, I admit there isn't anything I can offer in that field."

As if to remind Andarien, he wasn't the only one who had trouble in that regard. In fact Andarien was better than Eron in that field. He had been slowly working on staff with Miyuki (his was metal as opposed to wood), but it was much harder. Unlike Miyuki or Andarien he had not been doing this since childhood.

Andarien had to bite the inside of his cheek to keep from retorting to Eron what he wanted to say, that it didn't matter for Eron because he was going to go back home where it didn't matter for him if he could do these kinds of things. He didn't want to be angry with Eron, but he was so tired of not being able to do what most others considered old hat.

Eon seemed to sense his master's frustration, and he headbutted Andarien's leg. Not hard, just hard enough to get his attention. Then he started yipping away at him - reminding him that there were things he could do that no one else could do, and that no one could be good at everything.

The nice thing about understanding all languages was being able to understand the Pokemon. Eron was also very relieved that Eon had gotten to the heart of the matter. It was hard to get Andarien to focus on less negative aspects when they were in public without sounding like he was being scolded.

Hearing it from the practical Pokemon was much better, and Eon said it in a way that was far better.

Eron wished he knew more, but it was hard to remind Andarien he wasn't the only one. He just seemed fixated on those who could do what he couldn't and forget there were many others who, for various reasons, couldn't do the same. After all the list of people being asked to take shift was awfully short compared to the amount of people in the group.

"Well... now that's settled," Miyuki spoke up, "And I see the clearing in the trees, we'll be able to settle soon."

"Yes," Kyrie smiled, also glad that she hadn't had to speak to Andarien as well. "Miyuki, do you remember how much meat we have left? Should we do any hunting?"

They would stop long before nightfall, and it was good to plan ahead and make sure they wouldn't run out of anything. They'd been going for weeks after all, and with three meals a day there was no telling how much there was left.

Miyuki thought about it for a moment before replying.

"We have enough for about three days depending on what is being made and how we use what meat is left," she replied.

Since it always varied, though with all the traveling they were doing it meals with meat in them were required.

Kyrie nodded. "Then this will be a perfect opportunity to get some hunting in. Cael, Lancaeriel, once we're set up it would probably be best for you to get some rest - and I do mean rest, not just going to your room," she added dryly, "since you two have the first shift tonight."

Cael laughed and put one arm around Lancaeriel's shoulders, pulling her close and making her squawk in surprise. "You can count on us!" he said, probably too cheerfully.

"You're sure you want him to keep watch?" Daeron asked Kyrie, arching one eyebrow incredulously. "There's a reason couples weren't allowed on shift together back at the ranch."

"You'd rather watch with him?" Kyrie grinned at him. "Besides, you know he's serious when it's necessary."

"Or when he's threatened," Lancaeriel added with a grin, ducking out from her husband's arm.

"And most couples aren't allowed shifts together but there are exceptions," Lin pointed out to Dareon.

For it was a well known fact that Hamier and his wife always had a shift together. Mainly because she was the only person who could keep him in line and not be weirded out by his personality. Though Lin assumed after all these years everyone else should have been use to it.

Daeron chuckled. "True enough. But the only exception I know of are Halmir and Arthael, and no one else could stand Halmir at that point, whether on shift or not. Cael isn't near that point."

Cael arched both eyebrows. "Thanks," he said. "I think."

"Oh, pay them no mind," Earendil grinned as they left the trees and found themselves in a wide open area, where looking northward there were no trees in sight. "They're just teasing, I'm sure."

"I thought Halmir was a lot of fun growing up," Lin bantered back.

And she would too, she had grown up with him, and bugging Elros and a lot of other people. Lin was a bit of a strange child growing up and everyone knew that too.

"They are," Miyuki replied, "Or at least mom is teasing Uncle Dareon."

"To be fair, you made the most terrifying man on the ranch look like one of your stuffed dolls," Daeron pointed out with a laugh. "Both of them, actually!"

Elros had been cold and distant to everyone, and with those icy blue eyes of his he had made it seem as if he could see clear through people; and then of course there was Aragost, who had positively terrified the adults, sending shivers down their backs.

"Well it sounds like there are stories to be told here," Cael grinned at Miyuki. "So, mistress storyteller, when shall we heard these ones?"

Earendil chuckled. "These were before Miyuki's time," he told Cael, disappointing him. "They're even from before I really spent a lot of time with Lin. Lin's the only one who could tell you these stories, I think. Daeron might know a few but I don't think even he was there by then."

"No no...." Lin resisted the urge to stick her tongue at him, "I had nothing to do with the fact that around children Aragost is soft as any of my old toys. Besides, if you want to narrow it down to someone, go with Miyu. She adored him."

Which was technically true, Lin just took advantage of the fact that Aragost was more like a gruff mentor than a scary fighter. He loved children, that much was clear.

"All I know is, everyone knows mom at the ranch, and by extension anything that happens to her," Miyuki replied.

Which made more sense now to her why everyone knew her name the last time she was there.

"Sure, now that we know the truth about him," Daeron laughed. "But Elros? Come on, he might not have been as bad as Aragost but still no one wanted to talk to him."

Sure, by the time he had become a full-timer, Elros had already been in the Eastland, but he had visited the Borderlands quite regularly growing up, and he had come to know the silent man as well as anyone dared back then.

Cael grinned at Miyuki. "Well, since that is one of the places we hope to visit someday, then I suppose we shall hear some interesting stories when we're there," he beamed. "Til then it's a matter of getting there."

"But for now it's time to set up the tent," Kyrie put in, amused by the banter though she had little idea what it was all about. "Miyuki, if you please."

Shoneah was already scouting the land. "I would be happy to do some hunting," she offered. She unslung her bow and double checked her pistols at her hips - just in case, though she knew they weren't much good for hunting.

"Don't be too long," Kyrie cautioned her. "Whatever you catch, we need to have it here and cared for by sundown."

Shoneah nodded. "I'll do my best," she promised; and she headed off silently into the trees.
